“There are rules of this world, and there is what you do when life comes crashing down around you.”
This was my first experience with this author and my expectations were high. Readers lead me in a direction that this author was the best at what she does, but this was such a huge letdown.
From page one I knew that it was going to be a strange read and I’m not denying that it wasn’t. The story just reminded me of things I have read before with a mix of an episode of the Twilight Zone with a dash of the movie Happy Death Day. So for me it was a case of the dejavu’s. Kind of like a been there done that situation.
My favorite part of this book is the cover. Its beauty and it’s underlining darkness draws you in. It leads you to this creepy feeling and you can’t let go. Sadly, that was the only thing that stands out with this.
The story is obviously repetitive for reasons that I won’t say and you feel yourself being lead down this dark hole that is nearly inescapable.
The mystery that develops between the pages wasn’t nearly enough to keep me interested but I stuck with it.
If you’re interested in books by this author, I would start with something else.
This is why I should never judge a book by its cover.
I have this one pre-ordered, so I hope I end up liking it. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it.

It sounded like something I would love but the repetitiveness got to me. Hopefully you have a better experience

Aw no this is such a shame. I read Night Film last year and really enjoyed it. So the moment I found out about Neverworld Wake I was super excited. I did try getting an arc of it but I haven’t had any luck. I am meeting Marisha Pessl at Bookcon next week. I hope she has the book there. Sorry that you didn’t like this book.

I’ve heard amazing things about Night Film but haven’t gotten around to reading that yet.
But this one just wasn’t for me. I needed something different and it just reminded me of things I’ve seen/read before.
I hope you have fun at Bookcon!! I’ll be at BEA

I try to remind myself about judging a book by its cover too but I couldn’t because I have such a weakness for pretty covers haha.. You are good for not giving up a book 🙂 Great review!

I have the weakness too and it’s horrible at times.
Thank you!!! I give it my best shot on trying to finish a book that may not have been my cup of tea.
