Title: Bone Crier’s Moon (Bone Grace #1)
Author: by Kathryn Purdie
Publisher: HarperCollins/Katherine Tegen
Release Date: March 10th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Synopsis:
Bone Criers have a sacred duty. They alone can keep the dead from preying on the living. But their power to ferry the spirits of the dead into goddess Elara’s Night Heavens or Tyrus’s Underworld comes from sacrifice. The gods demand a promise of dedication. And that promise comes at the cost of the Bone Criers’ one true love.
Ailesse has been prepared since birth to become the matriarch of the Bone Criers, a mysterious famille of women who use strengths drawn from animal bones to ferry dead souls. But first she must complete her rite of passage and kill the boy she’s also destined to love.
Bastien’s father was slain by a Bone Crier and he’s been seeking revenge ever since. Yet when he finally captures one, his vengeance will have to wait. Ailesse’s ritual has begun and now their fates are entwined—in life and in death.
Sabine has never had the stomach for the Bone Criers’ work. But when her best friend Ailesse is taken captive, Sabine will do whatever it takes to save her, even if it means defying their traditions—and their matriarch—to break the bond between Ailesse and Bastien. Before they all die.

My Review
Holy wow, does Kathryn Purdie know how to write an amazing story! I was absolutely blown away by this beautiful tale and the fantastical elements. Purdie brought a magical world to life with captivating characters and a love you’re bound to root for.
Ailesse is such a great character – she’s strong and fierce and believes she knows what she wants. She’s ready to become the Bone Crier’s matriarch. But in order to become one, she must kill her one true love. And she’s prepared to…right? When lives become entwined and feelings intervene, Ailesse realizes she may not be fully prepared for the one ritual she’s been waiting for her whole life. And how, exactly, do you stop your destiny from going down that one single path? It’s not easy but Ailesse is one of those characters that I know would do anything to prevent a certain event from happening.
And her one true love, Bastien, is also strong but seeks revenge, not realizing that who he seeks revenge on has already started her ritual — and he’s now part of it. I have to say – Bastien is one of those swoon-worthy characters (even if he is driven by revenge). His growing relationship with Ailesse just had me so excited for their interactions. Both characters complement one another and as the reader, I could easily see why they were destined soul mates.
In all honesty, I found all the characters to be exceptionally written and described. Each had their own flaws which were well portrayed. And each character, especially Sabine, showed devotion and courage in everything they did. Sabine will do anything to protect Ailesse; her loyalty to her best friend is one reason I loved her character so much. She’s not afraid to fight for Ailesse; she wants her to be happy, even if it means changing her’s and Ailesse’s fates.
Outside of the characters, I felt the world building and writing was absolutely phenomenal. Purie has created a world that pulled me right in and didn’t let go until the last page. Her writing is truly what brought this story to life; Purdie is definitely an author bookworms should follow if they love out-of-this-world world building with lush writing and exceptional characters.
Overall, I’d have to say that this is going to be one of my top reads of 2020. Just the whole world and story and plot was mesmerizing and I found it difficult to put this book down. I highly recommend reading Bone Crier’s Moon, especially for those readers looking for a slow burn romance with a tantalizing plot. And needless to say, I cannot wait for the sequel!
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
