*Review* Normal People- Sally Rooney

41057294. sy475 At school, Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal.

A year later, they’re both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years in college, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. Then, as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other.

Sally Rooney brings her brilliant psychological acuity and perfectly spare prose to a story that explores the subtleties of class, the electricity of first love, and the complex entanglements of family and friendship.

My Review

“In a way, I like the idea of something so dramatic happening to me. I would like to upset people’s expectations.”

Have you ever read a synopsis then looked at the cover of a book and you instantly knew that it was going to be a book that you love? This book was that for me.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for quite some time now and then I finally found a special edition for my collection. It instantly drew me in and captured my attention in the best ways.

The way it’s written with its pure raw emotion and the wise/unique way she brought forth this coming of age story makes you fall that much harder. It was beautiful, funny, and vividly insightful. This is exactly how a coming of age novel should be written. It hits all the most important parts of life.

I’m mad at myself for waiting so long to pick this up because it became an instant favorite. I loved it so much and now I’m ready to read more books by her.

There is nothing better than a great cup of coffee and an even better book.

  1. So glad to hear you loved this. I picked it up not knowing anything about it but I found myself so absorbed by the story and just figuring out things that happened. I’m not much of a crier at books but I was sobbing during one of the scenes in this so much so that my partner came through to check on me.

    1. Have you watched the first season on Hulu? Prepare yourself if you haven’t. It was a tear fest for sure.

I’ve always heard great things about her books, so I was prepared for her magnificent work. I’m glad you loved it as much as I did.

  2. I started the first episode on the BBC and then decided to pick up the book. Knowing that I’ll cry I’ve not yet gone back to watch it yet but know I’ll eventually have to
