On the Tips of Her Fingers centers around Adela, a young girl leading a seemingly quiet life, whose mother spins beautiful stories for her at night. A series of strange events lead to Adela being gifted with magical abilities allowing her to escape from her world. We travel with Adela far from home where she begins to unravel a family secret, stumbling as she learns to use her powers, navigating difficult situations and her own complex feelings about growing up, and meeting friends, magical creatures, talking animals, and evil villains along the way.

In a world that can seem complicated, Adela shows the reader the importance of perseverance, courage, and a little bit of magic. On The Tips of Her Fingers is a dark fairytale that will inspire fans of fiction, fairytales, and magical realism to grapple with the concepts of escapism and self-identity in a whole new way.

My Review

On the Tips of Her Fingers is a beautiful, lush story filled with magic and adventure and self discovery. It’s wonderfully captivating with budding friendships and extraordinary character growth. I loved that this book was based on a Slovak fairytale. Any stories with fairytales or retellings, I will read. And like any good fairytale, On the Tips of Her Fingers was difficult to put down. I easily devoured this book in a couple days

The world building is breathtakingly vivid and unique. It’s the type of world building that easily brings this fairytale to life. I could imagine the beautiful landscapes and magic of this book, and I could feel the magic coursing through the pages of this tale. The world – like the cover of this novel – is beautiful and surreal and captivating. And don’t even get me started on the talking animals. I love fairytales that have talking animals, so I was jumping for joy when these lovely creatures popped up in the story. It was great to see friendships come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes even in animal form.

I enjoyed the aspect of friendship in this story. Friendship is always something I love to see in fairytales, and I loved that it was a big part of this story. Adela learns that she doesn’t need to navigate her adventure alone; she can rely on those closest to her. Adela also has such amazing character growth throughout this story. She learns to be courageous and to persevere even when the journey gets exceedingly hard. She discovers herself along this journey, and that was one of my favorite parts of this book. All great adventures lead to some sort of self discovery, and I loved how that was a big part of this story.

Kerpcar’s writing is fresh and bold, and adds to the magical whimsy of this novel. She has crafted exceptional characters that steal the show. Even the villains are so well written. Kerpcar’s writing is truly like a fairytale itself – poetic and lush. Her writing brings to life this adventurous story, and weaves together epic tales. I could not get enough of how well developed this story was. On the Tips of her Fingers is such a fantastically well written story that I’m excited to see what’s next for Kerpcar.

On the Tips of Her Fingers was a book that pleasantly surprised me. The story is filled with heart and hope and great adventures; it’s a story that takes its readers on a magical story., and makes sure it will be a journey no one will forget.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
