Traps are set and arrests are made, but the killer—who might be a member of the cast or crew—is one step ahead of their every move.

Author Information
Michael J. Bowler is an award-winning author who grew up in Northern California. He majored in English/Theatre at Santa Clara University, earned a master’s in film production from Loyola Marymount University, a teaching credential in English from LMU, and a master’s in Special Education from Cal State University Dominguez Hills. Michael taught high school in Hawthorne, California for many years, both in general education and students with disabilities. When Michael is not writing you can find him volunteering as a youth mentor with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, volunteering within the juvenile justice system in Los Angeles, or caring for his newly adopted son. He is a passionate advocate for the fair treatment of children and teens in California, and hopes his books can show young people they are not alone in their struggles.

Excerpt
The Theme from SWAT blasts through the room like a blizzard, startling the kids. Edward looks sheepish as he pulls the phone from his pocket.
“Sorry, I forgot to put it on vibrate.” He glances at the number and frowns. “It’s the sergeant. Sorry, I have to take this.” He stands and steps away from the table. “Yeah, Sergeant, what’s up?”
Cassie and Donovan exchange a look. Using electronic devices at the table is forbidden in the Stewart home, but then, the sergeant doesn’t usually call Edward at home. They watch as he listens, phone pressed to his ear, standing a few feet from the table in front of a painting of an enormous wave breaking against a pristine beach. Cassie loves that painting. Her mom completed it shortly before she died.
Edward ends his call and absently slides the phone back into his front pants pocket.
When he looks troubled, but doesn’t speak, Cassie says, “Dad? Everything okay?”
“I have to work after all.”
“You promised we’d hang out tonight, the three of us.” Cassie can’t hide her disappointment. He’s been working too many nightshifts lately and she misses having him around.
Edward nods, his expression grave. “That was before somebody decided to take Friday the Thirteenth too far.”
“What do you mean?” Donovan asks, his smooth brows knitted with confusion.
“Somebody was spotted in one of those hockey masks and overalls leaving Pierson Park just after dark.”
Cassie shrugs. “So? I’m sure lots of fans dress up like that every Friday the Thirteenth.”
Edward nods. “But most of ’em don’t commit murder.”
“What?” Shocked, she glances at Donovan, whose olive skin pales.
“Sergeant didn’t give me all the details, but the killing was pretty brutal, like in one of those Jason movies you guys watch. He wants every officer out on patrol tonight, cruising the parks and keeping a lookout for weird stuff going down.”
Cassie locks eyes with Donovan. “We just filmed there last weekend.”
“Which is why I’m happy you’re not filming tonight because it would’ve been canceled,” Edward asserts, his no-arguments tone in full timbre. “You keep the doors and windows locked.”
“What about taking Donovan home?”
He shakes his head. “I don’t want either of you out tonight. Donovan can crash on my bed. I won’t be back till morning anyway.” He glances at Donovan. “That work for you, pal?”
Looking rattled by the development, Donovan nods. “Uh, yeah, sure. Thanks.”
“I need to suit up and get down to the station.” Edward hurries from the dining room and Cassie hears the door to his bedroom close with a click.
A heavy silence settles over the dining room, and despite the pleasant odor of freshly cooked food, it chills her to the bone.
“That’s so weird, a Jason murder right after we…” Cassie lets the thought trail off.
Donovan, as always, is on the same wavelength. “Filmed a murder inspired by Friday the 13th in that same park.”
She nods, brushing some reddish curls away from her eyes. “Except we didn’t film the kill scene at the park. We used your backyard.”
“Yeah, but it’s supposed to take place in that park.”
“I wonder if my dad’ll find out exactly how the person was killed.”
“Are you thinking it could be the same? That’s not possible.”
She considers a moment. “Ordinarily, no. But what if…?
“What?”
“What if someone was spying on us when we filmed that scene and then decided to act it out for real?”
That’s…” He meets her wide-eyed gaze. “Scary as hell.”
