SYNOPSIS

The Good Luck GirlsWestworld meets The Handmaid’s Tale in this stunning fantasy adventure from debut author Charlotte Nicole Davis.

Aster, the protector
Violet, the favorite
Tansy, the medic
Mallow, the fighter
Clementine, the catalyst

THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS

The country of Arketta calls them Good Luck Girls–they know their luck is anything but. Sold to a “welcome house” as children and branded with cursed markings. Trapped in a life they would never have chosen.

When Clementine accidentally murders a man, the girls risk a dangerous escape and harrowing journey to find freedom, justice, and revenge in a country that wants them to have none of those things. Pursued by Arketta’s most vicious and powerful forces, both human and inhuman, their only hope lies in a bedtime story passed from one Good Luck Girl to another, a story that only the youngest or most desperate would ever believe.

It’s going to take more than luck for them all to survive.

Praise for THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS

“Don’t underestimate the girls in the Arkettan welcome houses because you might just lose your life. Davis’ The Good Luck Girls is a dust-filled, bloody fairytale set in a menacing world haunted with the reminder―the price of freedom is high, but it’s worth fighting for at all costs. Rise up, teen readers!” ―Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles

“This dystopian debut is deeply connected to today’s social issues, and readers will feel that impact.” ―Booklist

My Review:

“I’m damned if I’ll accept that wickedness is what it takes to survive this life.”

There have been quite a few books released recently that have that Thelma and Louise feel to it. This one was described as that with a mix of Westworld (?) and The Handmaid’s Tale. So I knew that it was going to be enjoyable. What I wasn’t expecting was to be blown away. This book blew my freaking mind and I loved it.

The Good Luck Girls have quite the reputation of starting trouble and not following orders. At young ages, girls are sold to Welcome Houses, so their families could pay off debts owed and live a more comfortable life. Welcome Houses are brothels for men that are traveling through and need a little companionship.

These girls clean and prepare things for the day, until they turn sixteen. Then they are expected to do whatever these Brags (client) say. The happier the Brag, the better your life will be at the Welcome House.

It’s Clementines birthday and this will be her first night working as a Good Luck Girl. Her first Brag is a well-known man and she’s terrified. Things get a little out of hand and she begs him to stop. With him not listening, she grabs the first thing she can get her hands on and hits him a few times until he releases her. But what she soon finds out is that she accidentally killed him. Not knowing what to do, she finds her sister, Aster and they come up with a plan.

Instead of doing the right thing and telling someone, they decide to run. Runaway to a place where all this can be left in the past. Some other girls who are close to Clem and Aster want to escape too. Now it’s five girls on the journey of a lifetime to escape their horrible lives.

But nothing in life is ever that easy and they are on the run. Hiding in dark and creepy places and running into a lot of trouble along the way. They soon find out that they are wanted and the only way to absolve their woes is to see the Lady Ghost. The stories say that she will help them evade the bounty on their heads and save them from punishment.

Is that tale too good to be true? Or will they make it to the light at the end of the tunnel?

This book hooked me just from the synopsis. I wish that I didn’t work all the time because I would have finished this in one day. It was that damn good. This fantasy western will make you look at that genre in a new light and will change your mind for the better.

The Good Luck Girls was one hell of a debut and I need book two instantly. This was a beautiful start to a fantastic series and this author will only grow more amazing as time goes on. This book was powerful and you’ll find yourself addicted to their story. You should add this to your tbr. Yes, it will get you out of your comfort zone but it’ll be totally worth it.

*ARC Review* Kingdom of Ash and Soot – C. S. Johnson

Cinderella meets Mission Impossible in this spy adventure series full of political intrigue, family secrets, and a determined heroine.

39604038Title: Kingdom of Ash and Soot

Author: C.S. Johnson

Publisher: Prodigy Gold Books

Release Date: July 3, 2018

Page Count: 352

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Goodreads Summary:

“I want to be free.” The words came rushing out of me before I could think through their implications and consequences.

“There are two things you need to know about yourself if you want to be free—what you stand for, and what you stand against.” Lady Penelope held up her hands, brandishing a pair of daggers that had been hidden in her skirts. “This world lives enslaved to its destruction, and so long as you are living, as long as you are fighting, you will be free.”

I gazed at the daggers, transfixed. Each blade was clothed in a leather scabbard, but the silver and obsidian of the daggers’ hilts winked at me, as though it was calling for me.

PRAGUE, 1870.

For the last ten years, nineteen-year-old Eleanora Svobodová has worked as a servant in her stepmother’s household. Along with her older brother, she dreams of the day they will be free to live life on their own terms.

But everything changes when their estranged grandmother comes to Prague on behalf of Queen Victoria. Throughout Bohemia, a string of murders and secret whispers hint at a larger coup. As the leader of the Order of the Crystal Daggers, an ancient order of spies and soldiers that protect kingdoms and their rulers, Lady Penelope is determined to mete out the perpetrators. Now, Eleanora must make the choice between a life of intrigue and saving the lives of others.

Can Eleanora find a way do the right thing and still find freedom?

With a fun blend of historical fiction, true love, castle intrigue, and family dysfunction, The Order of the Crystal Daggers is the latest adventure series from C. S. Johnson.

Kingdom of Ash and Soot is beautifully written, offering alluring and intense character-driven scenes that make you feel like you are standing next to Eleanora the entire time. The historical parts of the novel are compelling and so intricately woven into the plot. The twists and turns will leave you guessing and when the pieces finally come together, you won’t be disappointed.

I’ve read a ton of books that have traces of Cinderella, but never one that includes action scenes, political intrigue, and the incredible spy component like Mission Impossible. There’s the stepmother and the god-awful stepchildren that torment Eleanora and her brother, Ben. And then there’s the wonderfully stubborn grandmother that comes to their rescue, to take them out of servitude and give their lives more meaning and to give the two siblings what they have always wanted: freedom. But as some know, freedom comes at a cost. Always.

It comes at a cost that Eleanora is willing to pay.

Eleanora is a strong and courageous character and refuses to let anything, and anyone, break her. She controls her own destiny and refuses to let anyone tell her otherwise. Family is important to her, and putting up with her stepfamily is what she does to ensure her and Ben have a future. She’s a lovable main character and one that deserves a happily every after.

Though I loved Eleanora and her bravery and her desire to do what’s right, I loved Ferdy more. Ferdy is such a lovable and fun character and, of course, he sounds so attractive on the page. I was more excited about the scenes with Ferdy than I was for any other scenes (I’m hoping there’s a ton more of Ferdy in book two). He showcases charm and his dazzling intellect, all the while trying to sweep Eleanora off her feet. Ferdy brings a giddiness to the book that I feel would be missing if he didn’t exist. All in all, Eleanora is one lucky girl to have a character like Ferdy vying for her attention. I also very much enjoyed Lady POW in all her stubborn and sassy glory. There were so many enjoyable characters in Kingdom of Ash and Soot that once I finished the first book, it felt like I was leaving family.

When I read the last line of the book, I was like, “That’s it?!” I craved more of Eleanora’s story (and Ferdy, of course), and I cannot wait to read the second book. Eleanora’s journey is no where near its end; her journey has just begun, and I’m determined to watch her finish it.

Kingdom of Ash and Soot comes out Tuesday, July 3 (only a few more days!). But you can pre order the book today from Amazon or Barnes & Noble. I have my copy on pre order; I loved the story of Eleanora so much that I had to order a paperback copy!

If you love the spy element, romantic intrigue, fierce action scenes, swoon-worthy love interests, and character-driven plots, then I highly recommend Kingdom of Ash and Soot.

Goodreads Synopsis:

34323570Follow two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world…or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

A thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. Now, she believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other.

My Review

THIS. BOOK. WAS. OUTSTANDING.

I could just leave it there, but where’s the fun in that? No joke, though. Furyborn was an amazing and exhilarating read, and it was so difficult to put this book down when I had to work or clean or do something else. I’d literally be cleaning, and either be staring at the book sitting on the kitchen table or thinking about the characters. That’s how addicting I found this book. Like Lisa Maxwell’s blurb says below, this book was utterly breathtaking and has left me impatiently waiting for the sequel.

Furyborn follows the path of two girls, both centuries apart, but somehow connected. There’s Rielle, who can manipulate all seven types of powers. And there’s Eliana, a girl set on finding her kidnapped mother and protecting her younger brother while getting caught in the middle of a centuries-old war (and did I mention she’s hiding something that could make her a valuable asset in the war?). Both these characters are fierce, strong, and undoubtedly charming. I loved reading both their stories and seeing each character progress as a person. Legrand did an incredible job bringing these two characters to life. I highly enjoyed reading Eliana’s story just slightly more than Rielle’s, mainly because I could relate to Eliana’s fierceness, her snarky and sarcastic replies, and her overall protection toward her family.

85a9f3e4-2909-4687-9291-249794670565The world building was phenomenal. Claire did a wonderful job describing both parts of the world (one for Rielle and one for Eliana). There was not a single moment where I got lost in the world building or got bored; actually, there was never a dull moment in this book, in my opinion. There were tons of satisfying action scenes to keep the pace going and to keep the readers engaged. Though, I will admit, there were times where I secretly wanted to skip a character’s chapter just so I could continue the other character’s story. But I didn’t (now that I think about it, though, I might go back and re-read Furyborn, just to see what it’s like when you read each character’s story separately).

Overall, I was very impressed with Furyborn. I had high hopes and expectations for this book and I am happy to say that Furyborn did not let me down. The book exceeded my expectations in every possible way. I know the sequel does not come out until next year, but that does not mean I will stop wishing I had it in my hands at this very moment. Furyborn was one of my favorite fantasy reads of all time!

If you don’t have Furyborn on pre-order, then you need to march down to your nearest bookstore tomorrow morning and pick this up. You will not be disappointed! My co-blogger, Stacy, loved this book and she’s not a huge fantasy reader. To me, that says something.

Furyborn will be available tomorrow in bookstores across the globe, so remember to get your copy! If you are a hardcore fantasy reader like me or someone looking to pick up a fantastic book, then you need Furyborn in your life!

Have you read Furyborn yet? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Excerpt

“Would you like my assistance? Or you can just stand there so I can stare at you a bit longer.”

Startled, I whirled toward the sound of a familiar, seductive voice. Sniper stood by the walk-in closet in a cool, relaxed manner with his hand braced on the door. His hair was slicked back, looking polished and debonair. My heart pummeled, but not in fear.

ISAN Teaser 3Was I crazy to be attracted to him? Mesmerized by the black tuxedo forming to his perfect body, I stared at him and wondered if I’d dreamed him up. His presence confirmed I hadn’t imagined him above the stairs earlier. Then I wondered if he’d come alone.

“How’d you know I was here?”

Unnerved, I gritted my teeth. He hadn’t heeded my warning to stay away. I should scream or plan an escape out of the bathroom, but I couldn’t move or think. His presence stirred my curiosity and I wanted answers, especially when the lunatic thought he knew me.

“It doesn’t concern you,” he said.

His nonchalant tone caused me to raise my voice. “The hell it doesn’t.”

“I’ll explain later.”

I scoffed. “Are you here to try to kidnap me again?”

I might not have Helix, but I had my heels and months of training backing me up. If there was one thing I was good at, it was bringing a person to their knees. Courage grew inside me and I dropped my dress.

Sniper snapped out of his stupor and his amber eyes grew darker. “Where are my manners? I admire the dress, but I like what you’re wearing now so much more.” He waggled his eyebrows. “You look absolutely beautiful tonight.”

No. Don’t say that.

I became breathless when he closed the gap between us. Why was I letting him? When Sniper raised his hand, I flinched. My heart galloped faster when he cupped my face and ran his thumb ever so tenderly along my cheek.

“I wish I could’ve been your date tonight. We could’ve danced together. Dancing with me always made you happy.”

I closed my eyes for several seconds, hypnotized by his voice, by his touch. I pictured us slow dancing, not because it had happened, but because I desperately wanted the happiness he described.

34726469OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield — her brother, fighting with the enemy — the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating

My Review of Sky in the Deep

Have you ever read a book that not only grabs your attention from the beginning and never lets go but a book that makes you feel like you know the characters in a way that makes you part of their story? That’s how I felt with Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young.

30c319e6-31da-46a7-9149-af97ca65c3ffThis book is not only breathtaking, it’s profoundly powerful. It provides a message about family, about being strong in a world that wants to tear you down. Eelyn is such a powerful and headstrong character that her feelings and actions jump off the page. Her beliefs and family are everything to her, and even when her view of the Riki begins to change, she does not falter. Eelyn stays this strong protagonist throughout her whole story. I found her to be such an inspiration.

The tension between Eelyn and the Riki (especially a certain Riki) was one of my favorite aspects of the story. There were times where I felt the tension could have breathed fire; it was so intense and emotionally driven that it’s difficult to take a step back from the story and breathe. It was difficult to even put the book down. Adrienne Young brought the story and characters to life and beautifully captured the tension between both clans.

There are not enough words in the dictionary to describe how much I loved Sky in the Deep. I probably felt every emotion known to man because of this book. And that’s okay. That’s what books are supposed to do. And Sky in the Deep definitely did just that.

If this book is not on your list to read, it needs to be. You won’t want to miss this unique story. Adrienne Young is a fantastic storyteller and I can’t wait to read her next novel.

Sky in the Deep is in stores now, so run to your nearest bookstore and pick up this one-of-a-kind book!

About Risen:

Fans of Vampire Diaries and Twilight will be thirsting for this latest vampire addiction…

Risen2

My aunt has been kidnapped by vampires, and it’s up to me to save her. Only…I had no idea vampires existed. None. Nada. I’m more of a reader than a fighter, and even though I’d been wishing to escape my boring existence in the middle of nowhere, I’d give anything to have it back now if it meant my aunt was safe.

Then there’s the vampire Sebastian, who seems slightly nicer than most of the bloodsuckers I’ve run into so far. Yes, he’s the hottest being I’ve ever come across, but there’s no way I can trust him. He swears he’s helping me get answers, but there’s more to his story. Now I’m a key pawn in a raging vampire war, and I need to pick the right ally.

But my chances of surviving this war are slim at best, when the side I choose might be the one that wants me dead the most.

My Review

When I look for a new book to read, I look for originality, spunk, and, a strong plot. Risen by Cole Gibsen had all of that and more.

Risen was such a delicious read! I had a difficult time putting the book down, and when IRisen7 had to, I was wishing I was reading! I absolutely loved the plot and the intricate details.

I enjoyed how the characters were easily relatable and actually acted their age. I’ve read some books where I can’t relate to a single character or don’t understand why a character is acting a certain way. I did not have that issue with Risen. And the chemistry between Charlie and her love interest was to die for; the scenes that involved the two of them, it was like the electricity between them was jumping off the page. It was electrifying.

Risen captivated me from the first page to the last line. It’s been a while since I have read a good vampire story, so I was very pleased with this story. The in-depth research and creativity that went into the different races and the all-out vampire was was wholly original and unique.

If you are looking for a new vampire book that will have you glued to your seat and your eyes hooked on the pages, then Risen by Cole Gibsen is the book for you! And if you love hot vampires and humor and sizzling scenes, then grab your copy today!

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo – F.C. Yee

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo

Goodreads Synopsis:

Genie Lo is one among droves of Ivy-hopeful overachievers in her sleepy Bay Area suburb. You know, the type who wins. When she’s not crushing it at volleyball or hitting the books, Genie is typically working on how to crack the elusive Harvard entry code.

But when her hometown comes under siege from hellspawn straight out of Chinese folklore, her priorities are dramatically rearranged. Enter Quentin Sun, a mysterious new kid in class who becomes Genie’s self-appointed guide to battling demons. While Genie knows Quentin only as an attractive transfer student with an oddly formal command of the English language, in another reality he is Sun Wukong, the mythological Monkey King incarnate—right down to the furry tale and penchant for peaches.

Suddenly, acing the SATs is the least of Genie’s worries. The fates of her friends, family, and the entire Bay Area all depend on her summoning an inner power that Quentin assures her is strong enough to level the very gates of Heaven. But every second Genie spends tapping into the secret of her true nature is a second in which the lives of her loved ones hang in the balance.

This book was fantastic! I absolutely loved the aspect of the Monkey King and the Chinese history, as well as seeing it brought into the real world. F.C. Yee did a great job integrating both worlds together (the mythical and the real) and I adored the writing and battle scenes.

What I really enjoyed, though, about The Epic Crush of Genie Lo is how real the characters felt, especially when they talked. When the author added in the exclamation points or the capitalized dialogue, I could feel and understand how excited or upset the characters were, and that is something I truly look forward to in every book I read. Not all authors are able to accomplish that (for me, at least) in their first debut, but Yee knocked it out of the park.

I also enjoyed the aspect of Chinese history. I love learning about the different cultures, and with the Chinese culture, the history of the Monkey King is by far one of my favorites. So when I heard about this book, I had to get my hands on a copy. And on a side note, that cover is absolutely stunning!

I loved the molding of the Monkey King, demons, and real-life situations. Bringing ancient beings into Genie’s life is eye-opening to her, especially when she finds out the reason as to why she is being targeted. All Genie wants is to live a normal(ish) life, by doing homework and preparing for college entrance essays. She never expected her life to involve demons and Chinese Gods. It was a fun journey watching Genie’s transformation from normal volleyball girl to something even more.

This book was fantastic and I highly recommend for any action, fantasy and history lovers. I went into reading this book with high expectations and F.C. Yee surpassed those expectations. I am so thankful this book was written, and I cannot wait to see what Yee cooks up next (hopefully it’s more stories about Genie and Quentin!)

Overall rating: 4.5/5 stars
