*Review* Verity- Colleen Hoover

43225180Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

A standalone romantic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, releasing December 18th.

My Review:

“What you read will taste so bad at times, you’ll want to spit it out, but you’ll swallow these words and they will become part of you, part of your gut, and you will hurt because of them.”

Colleen Hoover steps out of her comfort zone and brings a riveting thriller to the table. An unexpected tale that you won’t be able to put down. This is the best possible way to lose sleep.

Lowen is dealing with the aftermath of losing her Mother and is struggling to gain her ground as a writer. She gets the call of a lifetime to finish a mystery series for a very famous author who is no longer able to write due to an injury she suffered after her being involved in a car accident. She’s hesitant at first but the money that is offered it too hard to pass up. That money will save her from complete ruin.

She picks up her life and moves into the Crawford residence. Lowen has years and years of notes and scrap pieces of papers to go through to help her complete this series. Thinking maybe she can find an outline or any information that will help her in any way. What she stumbles upon is something that will make her start to question everything. It’s a manuscript for an autobiography by Verity Crawford.

Lowen decides to keep it a secret to save Jeremy (Verity’s Husband) from dealing with more grief. He already lost his twin girls in two separate accidents and now is helping take care of his wife who is confined to a bed or a wheelchair. But as Lowen reads on and starts falling in love with Jeremy, she contemplates showing him this morbid manuscript.

Will Jeremy learn the truth about his wife? Or will Lowen complete the series while biting her tongue?

This book was full of crazy twists and turns that I didn’t know where to look next. There are not enough words in this language to warn you about how morbid and disturbing this book was but I loved every single page. CoHo leaves her comfy space to bring you something dark and twisted. I never knew that she could write something like this and I hope she continues with this genre. She was made for the dark and disturbing.

Verity is a novel that will shock you and turn your blood cold. Everything in this book will make you rethink everything and to trust no one. This was so intense that I couldn’t put it down. Just be ready to be mind-blown and to have your mind scattered in a million different pieces. This will definitely be the page-turner of the year.

*Arc Review* Adjustment Day- Chuck Palahniuk

“Drugs are popular because they give the user a window of madness or illness that can be scheduled. Unlike sickness, drugs can synchronize the infection, derangement, and recuperation of a group of people.”

Adjustment Day is a modern reinvention of Project Mayhem that takes over the world. People get brainwashed by what they see on television and what they read in this little blue/black book. They get consumed by what they see and hear. It’s eerie how similar this story is to the world we are living in now.

The first rule of Adjustment Day is you must talk about Adjustment Day.

The second rule of Adjustment Day is you must talk about Adjustment Day.

The third rule of Adjustment Day is you must carry the little blue/black book at all times and it must be visible.

The fourth rule of Adjustment Day is if you die, that ear is coming off.

Chuck Palahniuk is my favorite author and it pains me to say this but this is the first time that I have been fully disappointed by one of his books. There wasn’t anything special about this and I couldn’t even finish it. My heart breaks.

If you are just reading Palahniuk for the first time, I would find another one. If you don’t look at it, maybe it will go away!

*Arc Review* My Plain Jane- Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

Release date: June 26th

Publishing house: Harper Teen

Genre: Fantasy

I enjoyed book one, so I already had high hopes for book two.  Which, they each can be read as a stand-alone. And it does not fail.

I’ve read one review where they compared it to the Ghostbusters and a retelling of Jane Eyre, which I have never read before.

But here is what this book is about. Jane Eyre can see ghosts after having a shoddy childhood as she was stuck in an orphanage. Until one day she finds an opening for a governess. But before she goes, there is a murder at her orphanage and the group called the society is coming to investigate. There’s a ghost at a local bar and they plan on getting answers.  At this time a lady going to a bar without being accompanied was very unlady like unless she was a lady of the night.

I won’t say more but this book wasn’t as funny as the first but I enjoyed this storyline a lot more. It seemed to have a cuter romance to it especially for two characters. And the pleasant thing about these stories is that each author takes a character. So there’s not more than one mindset to so some characters and they don’t get all the spotlight.

These authors really know how to mix the fantasy of the ghost world to mixing it with that day and age. At how little Gents and women chatted with one another and how some of things they did was extremely risky. Especially with a woman showing her bare leg. And what’s nice about books in the series is that the writing is not to the same style of the times. If it was I’d say for us normal readers it would hard to read old English writing which we read Beowulf or Canterbury Tales. So overall this book was amazing and I didn’t want it to end. It was one of my higher fantasy books that I’ve read this year and will be a favorite for the year.

The Grip Of It- Jac Jemc

“The bed is hotter when he’s in it, and I hate that, but it’s a hate I’d rather not do without. In other words, I love hating his presence when it means a few degrees under a blanket. Even if I don’t recognize him right now, I can recognize the heat coming off his body. Even though I don’t recognize him, I am growing to recognize myself. I say, Tell me how you’ll hurt me and I’ll tell you how I’ll respond.”

Buying a house should be a joyous occasion. It should mean a start for a new and better life for yourself and your family. And when something tries to come between that, you fight with every once of fiber you have to keep it that way.

Julia and James find the house of their dreams. It’s out of the city and surrounded by a lake and a wooded area. It fits them perfectly and they get it at a bargain. Moving in, they find hidden rooms and compartments which intrigue them even more about their new house.

Things aren’t as they always seem. At first they hear it, like the house is breathing and it is followed by a smell so rancid and then the shadows come out to play.

With every waking moment they feel uneasy. Their next door neighbor seems to be watching them every chance he gets. When they go searching around the house, a hidden room they find and explore the first time seems to disappear. Then Julia has horrendous bruises appear in her body.

As they dig deeper into the mysteries of this house/neighbor, the creepier things become for Julia and James.

I’m not usually one to get freaked out by a book, but this one hit too close for comfort. The way the presence breathed, growled, and snarled, my husband and I know that all to well. Every time something made itself known, I would relive memories of when I first moved to IL. They weren’t happy memories, but ones of a true haunting.

This book had me hooked automatically, it takes a bite out of you very quickly and doesn’t let up.

The one thing that bothered me was that it leaves you in the dark about a lot of things. I want answers and I need them now. I have so many alternative ideas running around in my head.

What dropped my rating down a bit was the stereotypical horror setting. Married couple buys new house, they get it for a bargain, and strange haunting start to proceed. Just give me something different to play with here, but it was still a great read.

What stood out was some of the apparition scenes. James is walking in the hallway and spots Julia wearing a Mardi Gras mask in the guest bedroom, but Julia is actually in the main bedroom……

If you are looking for blood and guts, look elsewhere. But if you’re looking for alternative/domestic horror, then you have found your match.

Every Time We Meet At The Dairy Queen Your Whole Fucking Face Explodes- Carlton Mellick III

“This would have been heaven to me if her face wasn’t in its current state. I feel like I’m being groped by a flesh-eating zombie.”

I’ve always wanted to read anything by Carlton Mellick the Third. My first experience with him was The Haunted Vagina. I became giddy with delight and terror as I found out that me and the main character share the same name. Spooky!!

I was lucky enough to be with a man who encourages my needs for bizarro and was gifted this from him.

If you are looking for the King of Bizarro then look no further. No one can intrigue you with a cover like he can and no one can make your entire face come apart just by thought.

Ethan has met the love of his life at school. But him being shy has him lusting from afar. She is quite the unusual dish. They call her Spiderweb and Frankenstein because there might be something uniquely horrifying about her face.

They side eye each other while on the bus and one day that changes with a slip of a note. Now they are boyfriend and girlfriend.

On a date at Dairy Queen… her face kapows and face skin and blood is everywhere. Seems that every time she meets Ethan and she becomes overwhelmed with love and emotion her face explodes to kingdom come.

Her dad being super crafty sews her face back together making her look like the Frankenstein Monster.

Jill seeing that her boyfriend Ethan is in trouble with a bully, she takes matters into her own hands and now they are in hiding. True love knows no boundaries.

If you don’t make your face explode after reading this then what the fuck are you doing? I had to gather all those pieces like Jackie O’ once had to do.

Have you ever felt that no one will ever understand? This book has all the answers and more.

This was completely obscene, strange and weird and I was in love. So in love that I now have stapled skin on my face.

I now want to buy his entire catalog of books to add to my collection. And no one will ever be disappointed by the over-the-top adventures of the bizarre.
