BOOK COVER (2)

Title: Beasts of the Frozen Sun (Frozen Sun Saga #1)

Author: Jill Criswell

Publisher: Blackstone

Release Date: August 6th 2019

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

Burn brightly. Love fiercely. For all else is dust.

Every child of Glasnith learns the last words of Aillira, the god-gifted mortal whose doomed love affair sparked a war of gods and men, and Lira of clan Stone knows the story better than most. As a descendant of Aillira and god-gifted in her own right, she has the power to read people’s souls, to see someone’s true essence with only a touch of her hand.

When a golden-haired warrior washes up on the shores of her homeland–one of the fearful marauders from the land of the Frozen Sun–Lira helps the wounded man instead of turning him in. After reading his soul, she realizes Reyker is different than his brethren who attack the coasts of Glasnith. He confides in her that he’s been cursed with what his people call battle-madness, forced to fight for the warlord known as the Dragon, a powerful tyrant determined to reignite the ancient war that Aillira started.

As Lira and Reyker form a bond forbidden by both their clans, the wrath of the Dragon falls upon them and all of Glasnith, and Lira finds herself facing the same tragic fate as her ancestor. The battle for Lira’s life, for Reyker’s soul, and for their peoples’ freedom has only just begun.

SYNOPSIS

Watch HollowDeep within the enchanted woods in the town of Watch Hollow stands the once-grand Blackford House, whose halls hold a magical secret: a giant cuckoo clock that does much more than tell time. But when the clock’s gears cease to turn, an evil presence lurking among the trees begins to come out of the shadows.

When Lucy and Oliver Tinker arrive in Watch Hollow, they have no idea that anything is wrong. A mysterious stranger has made their father an offer that’s too good for him to refuse. All Mr. Tinker needs to do is fix the clock at Blackford House and fistfuls of gold coins are his to keep.

It doesn’t take long, however, for the children to realize that there is more to Blackford House than meets the eye. And before they can entirely understand the strange world they’ve stumbled into, Lucy and Oliver must join forces with a host of magical clock animals to defeat the Garr—a vicious monster that not only wants Blackford House for itself, but also seeks to destroy everything the Tinkers hold dear.

Q&A with Amy Fellner Dominy

Thank you so much for joining us, Amy! It was a pleasure interviewing you!

  1. Announcing Trouble is your latest book, which I cannot wait to read! What was your inspiration behind Announcing Trouble?
It was summer and in my house that means baseball was on the TV. My husband is a huge fan and my son played baseball through college so I’ve been to a ton of games. I liked the idea of writing about a ballplayer, but I wanted to do something different than other books I’d read. That’s when I got the idea about sports broadcasting. Josie and Mai appeared in my writer brain—I have no idea where they came from—and I think Garrett was living somewhere in my heart just waiting for a chance to be my book boyfriend.
  2. Announcing Trouble appears to be a more light-hearted contemporary compared to your previous YA books. Was the writing process any different for this book?
It’s definitely more light-hearted and that’s for a reason. When I started this book, I was in a blue mood and I wanted to cheer myself up. I just felt in my heart that it was time to write something full of fun and romance and happily-ever-afters. Writing a book that was everything I love to read made the process a lot of fun. It definitely helped get me back to a happier place.
  3. What is your favorite part of the writing/publishing process?
There are a few things that spring to mind.
The first hint of an idea. The characters peeking out to say hello. The lure of a shiny new thing and the possibility of what might unfold. I love when I’m struggling over a scene and suddenly the solution hits me. I love when I get to that point in a novel and I know I’m going to reach “THE END.” (Not every novel that I start is one that I finish.) And I love when the book finally comes out and even though I shouldn’t, I read reviews and it’s an amazing feeling when someone you’ve never met tells you they love your characters as much as you do.
  4. If you could have your book made into anything (Broadway musical, TV show, movie, ballet dance, soap opera, etc.), which would you choose and why?
TV show would be awesome. Because then the story could continue and grow. I’d love to see what happens with my characters down the road!
  5. What is a quirky or unique habit you have?
I talk out loud when I write. I think because the story plays like a movie in my head and I’m almost dictating the soundtrack to my fingers—if that doesn’t sound too weird. I know I should work from home, but I still go to coffee shops a lot. I figure I’m no louder than two people having a conversation at another table, right? And so far, no one has questioned what I’m doing.
  6. There’s a ton of aspiring authors out there. What advice would you give them?
Stick to the three Ps: Perspiration. Persistence. Patience. There are no short cuts. You have to do the work, you have to stick with it, and you have to give yourself time to learn the craft. But if you do, the publishing world is a big one and there is room for you!

Margaret Owen

Born and raised at the end of the Oregon Trail, Margaret Owen spent her childhood haunting the halls of Powell’s Books. After earning her degree in Japanese, her love of espresso called her north to Seattle, where she worked in everything from thrift stores to presidential campaigns. The common thread between every job can be summed up as: lessons were learned.

She now spends her days wrestling disgruntled characters onto the page, and negotiating a long-term hostage situation with her two monstrous cats. (There is surprisingly little difference between the two.)

My Review

“Fie remembered the first time she’d held Phoenix fire. She hadn’t wanted to burn the world down; she’d wanted the world to know she could.”

The Merciful Crow is one of those YA dark fantasy books that you will remember. This book brings the fantasy genre to new heights, with incredible world building and memorable characters and with a romance that sparks right off the page. The Merciful Crow is easily one of my top reads of 2019.

Fie is part of the lowest caste in her world, known as Crow. She is a Crow-witch in training, someone with the ability to use magic of the other castes from their teeth. This world is built on a caste system, with each caste level named after a type of bird. The teeth from each caste give Fie the ability to use different types of magic. The higher caste levels have a birthright (which Crow does not) and everyone treats the Crows as if they’re not humans and don’t deserve to breathe the same air as them. The whole caste system was intriguing and it was sad, yet eye-opening, to see how Crows are treated.

Fie is thrown together with a prince and his attractive Hawk bodyguard when her father can no longer oversee the Oath sworn with the Phoenix prince. Now on the run from Vultures and others wanting to kill them, Fie must safely guide the prince to his allies. And on this journey, she starts to figure out exactly who she wants to be and what it means to be a Crow Chief and to follow your destiny.

“Look after your own. Crows had one rule. And she had to be a Crow Chief.”

Fie is an overall relatable character. One of the best things about The Merciful Crow is how Fie is captured between the words of the story. She’s just like anyone else in the world: she has wants that she can’t put before her own family because they don’t necessarily do anything for the needs of her crew. She’s also fiercely loyal to her family. My favorite thing about Fie, though, was her boldness. She easily speaks her mind and, though she is quite stubborn, her boldness creates a fun experience for the reader.

And then there’s the secondary characters, who Margaret Owen brings to life through the pages and gives all the characters the scenes they need for the readers to understand just who each character is and what their need in the story is. And that romance…WOAH. Margaret Owen sure knows how to write a blossoming romance. It was passionate and slow-burning and everything I look for in a romance. It’s honestly one of the best romances I’ve read in a while.

“I can do something better with my life than die.”

Margaret Owen is a talented storyteller who easily weaves together beautiful descriptive scenes and wholly original characters. The writing is different and unique from most YA fantasy books I’ve read, but I loved that. The writing has its own voice and, dang, is that voice captivating. I could not put this book down and when I had to, I could not get the story out of my head. And I’m not fully prepared to wait for the sequel because July 2020 is far away and my heart needs the sequel now.

The Merciful Crow captured my attention from the first line and refused to let go. It’s honestly difficult to put my love for this book into words because I don’t quite know the right words to say to do this book justice. The Merciful Crow was just so unique and fantastical and an overall mesmerizing story. It’s complex and engrossing and a fast-paced read. I will forever recommend this book.

If you’re looking for a dark and enthralling fantasy with captivating characters and solid writing and world building, then I highly recommend The Merciful Crow.

My overall review: 5 out of 5 stars

She grew up in San Luis Obispo, CA, but now lives in the Bay Area with four awesome friends (because it’s the Bay and she’d like to be able to retire one day) and two black cats (who are more like a tiny dragon and an even tinier owl). My Review

“People would notice; they’d recognize the armor. But I wanted them to. I wanted them to know that the legacy they’d tried to stamp out still smoldered in the ashes.”

The Storm Crow is one of those books I couldn’t put down. Thia’s battle with her emotions and her enemies is powerful and captivating. The action in this novel is beautifully written and full of fantastical elements. I became so engrossed in the world and characters that there were times I forgot I was in the real world and not in Thia’s world.

The elemental crows were unique and fascinating and added a mystical touch to the story. Rhodaire’s crows are essential to their life and without them, the people have to learn how to perform simple tasks, such as growing crops. Life changes drastically for the people, and not just because the crows were lost; loved ones were lost, too, in the battle. To Thia, everything seems hopeless. All she sees is darkness and no light at the end; she doesn’t see how she can move on.

One aspect of The Storm Crow I highly enjoyed seeing was how depression was openly discussed. Thia realizes early on that the destruction of her world as she knew it threw her into a deep and potentially dark depression. Throughout the story, Thia’s depression helps shape her character and starts to give her the strength she needs to overcome the past and save her kingdom and people. Thia’s depression battles are detailed to where the reader could feel and/or see Thia openly struggling. Her depression felt real and raw. She becomes a master in hiding her depression behind a fake smile, but those closest to her can see the past is eating her alive. I haven’t read many YA fantasy books that openly mention/discuss depression, so I was surprised that this became a key point in The Storm Crow. There’s so many readers that battle depression, and I know to some it’s important to see depression depicted, especially in fantasy. How Josephson address depression in her book really lays it out for the world to see and for everyone to understand that depression is not something you can easily shake off. Her depiction of depression was, overall, one of the main reasons I loved The Storm Crow.

“I might be queen, but you were meant to be so much more. Crow or no crow, one way or another, you will fly. You were always meant to rule the sky.”

Thia is a strong and emotional person. She knows she has to go to Illucia, the kingdom that attacked hers, to try to bring peace and save her people. Thia, at first, believes everything is lost; the fight she once had in her is gone, left behind in the rubble of the battle. But that all changes when Thia finds an unhatched storm crow egg. To Thia, this changes everything. Thia has a newfound hope to fight for her kingdom and people, all from within the palace walls of her enemy. But there’s just one slight problem: Thia doesn’t know how to hatch a crow egg. Nevertheless, Thia refuses to give up hope; she refuses to give up.

The secondary characters in The Storm Crow were also what made this book a 5 star review for me. Her best friend and bodyguard, Kiva, share not just a best friend bond, but a sisterly bond. They’re relationship reminded me of my relationship with my best friend, and I love seeing those types of friendships depicted in fantasy stories. Kiva helps Thia battle her depression while staying in enemy territory. They’re not just best friends; they’re a team and both will do whatever it takes to see Queen Razel burn for her wrongdoings. Then there’s Caylus. Caylus is a soft yet incredibly smart and reliable friend to Thia; she trusts him so much that she relies on him to help her solve the hatching behind a crow egg.

And, of course, there’s Prince Ericen. At first, he’s a terrible, cold-heartless person; he’s basically everything that makes a villain. But he slowly starts to show Thia a side he’s never shown anyone, not even his mother, the ruthless Queen Razel. Ericen wants to build a trusting relationship with Thia but Thia doesn’t quite know how that’s possible when he’s the son of the woman that killed her mother. He’s a well described character with an interesting backstory.

“It was only you. Because I, like everyone, knew what you were.

A delinquent?

A storm. A tempest of lightning and thunder with the kind of heart found only in legends.”

Josephson’s writing is captivating and compelling. She weaves words together to bring a magical and powerful story to light. Her description of the kingdoms and the characters is wonderfully well-written and very descriptive. Josephson also knows how to depict feelings and relationships really well. There was phenomenal character growth with Thia and her companions; Thia really starts to come into her own and grow as a person and fighter.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed The Storm Crow. Josephson creates a world the reader can easily get lost in. If you enjoy an adventurous fantasy novel with lovable animals and relationships, then I definitely recommend reading The Storm Crow!

My Review

“Gran said once that in families with long lines of bone magic – families like ours – power is like a fire that burns hotter with each new generation. She meant it to be encouraging, and she had pride in her eyes when she said it, but by then I already knew the truth – the stronger the blaze, the harder it is to control. And the faster it destroys.”

The Bone Charmer tells the tale of Saskia and her journeys after her kenning. Her Bone Charmer mother has the power to see multiple future paths for Saskia, but Saskia believes her mother only picks the path she will despise the most: the path of a Bone Charmer and with the guy she does not love. But all actions have consequences and Saskia’s future gets split into two paths after her bone fractures. And in each path, she faces unforeseen dangers that will not only harm her, but the people she holds close. Saskia must determine which path is meant to survive and be her future before its too late.

Saskia is a fun and wholly original character that doesn’t want her future to be defined by a kenning. She knows what she wants to do and, yet, it’s tradition to have a kenning. I would have liked to have seen a bit more character development on Saskia, but I have a feeling the sequel will unveil even more of Saskia’s character and her future.

Breeana Shields knows how to weave a world. The world in The Bone Charmer is fascinating and beautifully depicted. Both of Saskia’s paths are well-written and uniquely created. At first, it was a bit confusing trying to determine which path I was reading but once I figured that out, the story started to pick up and really developed into a fun adventurous story. And I enjoyed the aspect of Saskia’s future being broken into two paths. It made me think of what would happen if my future broke into two paths: what path would I want to be my future?

“The past is a rigid and unchangeable thing.”

I also really enjoyed the idea of bone magic and blood. I found the idea to be fascinating and seeing Saskia explore bone magic in one of her paths was really interesting. A Bone Charmer has the capability to use magic to either see the past, present, or future, but they cannot see all three. Saskia can see the present but not the past or future, which is a really neat concept. All three are wonderfully explored in The Bone Charmer, and I thought it was unique to see just how different bone magic is used for each reading.

Anyone who knows me (and my love for the fantasy genre) knows how much I enjoy a good plot twist. And, boy, does The Bone Charmer have plot twists. The Bone Charmer kept me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I wanted to know the potential outcome of each of Saskia’s paths and what that did for her character development.

Overall, The Bone Charmer is captivating and weaves together magic and the possibilities of one’s future. I look forward to seeing how Saskia’s story continues in the sequel!

The Bone Charmer comes out May 21, 2019.
