Sawkill Girls- Claire Legrand

38139409    Beware of the woods and the dark, dank deep.

He’ll follow you home, and he won’t let you sleep.

Who are the Sawkill Girls?

Marion: the new girl. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll never find.

Zoey: the pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s broken—or maybe everyone else is.

Val: the queen bee. Gorgeous and privileged, ruthless and regal. Words like silk and eyes like knives, a heart made of secrets and a mouth full of lies.

Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires.

Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight… until now.

Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts)- L.C. Rosen

jack  My first time getting it in the butt was kind of weird. I think it’s going to be weird for everyone’s first time, though.

Meet Jack Rothman. He’s seventeen and loves partying, makeup and boys – sometimes all at the same time. His sex life makes him the hot topic for the high school gossip machine. But who cares? Like Jack always says, ‘it could be worse’.

He doesn’t actually expect that to come true.

But after Jack starts writing an online sex advice column, the mysterious love letters he’s been getting take a turn for the creepy. Jack’s secret admirer knows everything: where he’s hanging out, who he’s sleeping with, who his mum is dating. They claim they love Jack, but not his unashamedly queer lifestyle. They need him to curb his sexuality, or they’ll force him.

As the pressure mounts, Jack must unmask his stalker before their obsession becomes genuinely dangerous…

Did Someone Say MORE Fantasy for WWW?

That’s right. Its Wednesday, and I’m reading more and more fantasy. Though, I feel as if that should no longer be a surprise to you all, since most of my reviews encompass fantasy books.

But if you notice below, there’s one book in there that’s out of sorts. It’s not fantasy, but rather part of one of my other favorite genres: Science Fiction! Can you guess which book it is?

WWWEvery Wednesday, we participate in a blog post known as ‘WWW Wednesdays.’ This was originally hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm before moving to Taking on a World of Words.

You may be wondering what the three Ws stand for. The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

What am I currently reading?

Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf

This book is everything I thought it would be and more. Zera is a fierce yet snarky girl with amazing comebacks who only wants her heart back and to do so, she must take the heart of the Prince. Sounds easy right? Not so much. I have about 100 pages left and it keeps getting better and better; though, I will admit, I’ll be sad when the book ends because that means I’ll have to wait for book two.

Bruja Born by Zoraida Córdova

Bruja Born is the sequel to Labyrinth Lost and is written in Lula’s point of view. Labyrinth Lost was one of my favorite books last year, so I am beyond excited to read more about Lula and her family. It takes off to quite the start, a very intriguing beginning. I can’t wait to see what’s in story for Lula further into the book!

Furyborn by Claire Legrand

This book has easily become one of the best fantasy YA books I have ever read. It’s got everything: action, intrigue, romance, magic, etc. If you do not have this book on your TBR radar, then you need to! If you’re looking for more thoughts on this book, check out mine and Stacy’s reviews below!

What do I plan on reading next?

Awakened by James S. Murray with Darren Wearmouth

Is there anyone that’s a fan of the TV show Impractical Jokers? That is one of my absolute favorite TV shows to binge watch, so I was ecstatic when I heard that James Murray was writing a novel. And I was even more ecstatic when I got to meet him at C2E2 AND get an early copy of Awakened. And yep, if you guessed this was the science-fiction book I was talking about, then you are correct! There’s also a mix of horror, so definitely check this out if you love reading either of those genres!

A Thousand Beginnings and Endings, edited by Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman

Okay, so this book also has some science-fiction but from what I’ve heard, it’s mainly fantasy. Either way, I am excited to dive into this collection of short stories on the mythology from East and South Asia. Fifteen authors came together to write this short story collection. I haven’t read a short story in a very long time, so I look forward to reading all the ones in this one book!

*ARC Review* Two Queens Will Rise in Furyborn by Claire Legrand

6a6ef6ba-a88c-4fd7-8e51-306ecb65d72f

Book title: Furyborn

Author: Claire Legrand

Publishing Company: Sourcebooks Fire

Release Date: May 22, 2018

Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Goodreads Synopsis:

34323570Follow two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world…or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

A thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. Now, she believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the wonderful advance copy!

My Review

THIS. BOOK. WAS. OUTSTANDING.

I could just leave it there, but where’s the fun in that? No joke, though. Furyborn was an amazing and exhilarating read, and it was so difficult to put this book down when I had to work or clean or do something else. I’d literally be cleaning, and either be staring at the book sitting on the kitchen table or thinking about the characters. That’s how addicting I found this book. Like Lisa Maxwell’s blurb says below, this book was utterly breathtaking and has left me impatiently waiting for the sequel.

Furyborn follows the path of two girls, both centuries apart, but somehow connected. There’s Rielle, who can manipulate all seven types of powers. And there’s Eliana, a girl set on finding her kidnapped mother and protecting her younger brother while getting caught in the middle of a centuries-old war (and did I mention she’s hiding something that could make her a valuable asset in the war?). Both these characters are fierce, strong, and undoubtedly charming. I loved reading both their stories and seeing each character progress as a person. Legrand did an incredible job bringing these two characters to life. I highly enjoyed reading Eliana’s story just slightly more than Rielle’s, mainly because I could relate to Eliana’s fierceness, her snarky and sarcastic replies, and her overall protection toward her family.

85a9f3e4-2909-4687-9291-249794670565The world building was phenomenal. Claire did a wonderful job describing both parts of the world (one for Rielle and one for Eliana). There was not a single moment where I got lost in the world building or got bored; actually, there was never a dull moment in this book, in my opinion. There were tons of satisfying action scenes to keep the pace going and to keep the readers engaged. Though, I will admit, there were times where I secretly wanted to skip a character’s chapter just so I could continue the other character’s story. But I didn’t (now that I think about it, though, I might go back and re-read Furyborn, just to see what it’s like when you read each character’s story separately).

Overall, I was very impressed with Furyborn. I had high hopes and expectations for this book and I am happy to say that Furyborn did not let me down. The book exceeded my expectations in every possible way. I know the sequel does not come out until next year, but that does not mean I will stop wishing I had it in my hands at this very moment. Furyborn was one of my favorite fantasy reads of all time!

If you don’t have Furyborn on pre-order, then you need to march down to your nearest bookstore tomorrow morning and pick this up. You will not be disappointed! My co-blogger, Stacy, loved this book and she’s not a huge fantasy reader. To me, that says something.

Furyborn will be available tomorrow in bookstores across the globe, so remember to get your copy! If you are a hardcore fantasy reader like me or someone looking to pick up a fantastic book, then you need Furyborn in your life!

Have you read Furyborn yet? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

*Arc Review* Furyborn- Claire Legrand

“I’d wager everything I am that you never experience such thoughts as I do. Sometimes your goodness shines so brightly that I want to devour you. Maybe if I have enough of you, that light you shine will stave off the wickedness that lives inside me.”

I won’t lie, I’m not much of a fantasy reader. I usually turn my head away with disgust and read something light, fluffy, or gruesome. But this year is the year of fantastic YA fantasy books.

Furyborn is going to blow all fantasy competitors out of the water. The story that unfolds between these pages makes you gasp. You look over at the person sitting next to you as you start to communicate with your eyes asking them did you read what you thought you read?

Can we take a break and talk about all that sexual tension? Phew! After all of that you have to fan yourself with something. Some books overdo the tension but this one made your heart race. You couldn’t get any better than what was shared in this book.

This was such a unique and a twisty ride of a book. The way the lands were described, you could imagine in your mind how they actually looked and felt like. It was purely stunning. I fell in love.

For fantasy lovers and reluctant fantasy readers, such as myself will enjoy this wild ride. The number of pages is very intimidating but it’s totally worth it. You’ll never see any of these twists coming. Now I must twiddle my thumbs and impatiently wait for book two.
