*Review* The Chain- Adrian McKinty

42779092

You just dropped off your child at the bus stop. A panicked stranger calls your phone. Your child has been kidnapped, and the stranger explains that their child has also been kidnapped, by a completely different stranger. The only way to get your child back is to kidnap another child within 24 hours. Your child will be released only when the next victim’s parents kidnap yet another child, and most importantly, the stranger explains, if you don’t kidnap a child, or if the next parents don’t kidnap a child, your child will be murdered. You are now part of The Chain.

“The Egyptians lived in a god-and-demon-infested world. There are demons here too, but they are human beings.”

This is every parent’s worst nightmare. You think your child is safe and then you get that dreaded call that your child has been kidnapped. That made this book intense, terrifying, and I just couldn’t stop reading it. It was really addicting even though it was seriously f***ed up.

You think your life is going good. You have a daughter you love unconditionally, you’ve had some great news about your health, and you just got a job that will change your life. And then you get a call that makes your life crash to the ground. Your daughter has been kidnapped and if you don’t follow every direction perfectly, you’ll break the chain and your daughter will die.

The panicked stranger tells you the rules. You have a short period of time to transfer a lot of money in bitcoins to an account on the dark web and then you have to complete the horrifying second part. You must kidnap another kid and relay those same terms to them. You have to pick someone that won’t go to the cops and break that chain. Any little slip will cause a chain reaction in children being murdered.

Now you must become a part of the chain to get your family back. Would you be strong enough to keep the chain intact? Or will you break that chain and cause chaos to your family and lots of others?

This book was completely insane. I didn’t know much about it until a friend mentioned it to me and I was instantly sold. It was morbid and made your skin crawl but there was something about it that I became obsessed with. The mystery was strong and it takes a bit to figure it out but once you do it is shocking.

The Chain is not for the faint of heart. This will be that book that haunts your dreams and makes you hug your children a little closer. It was unique and you won’t be able to put it down. It’s definitely an amazing read in dark sort of way but a must-read.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 5/13/19

This week I’ll be reading two books that the publisher sent me and a book for the book club I started at the Library.

What are you reading this week?

Baby Teeth- Zoje Stage

35410511Sweetness can be deceptive.

Meet Hanna.

She’s the sweet-but-silent angel in the adoring eyes of her Daddy. He’s the only person who understands her, and all Hanna wants is to live happily ever after with him. But Mommy stands in her way, and she’ll try any trick she can think of to get rid of her. Ideally for good.

Meet Suzette.

She loves her daughter, really, but after years of expulsions and strained home schooling, her precarious health and sanity are weakening day by day. As Hanna’s tricks become increasingly sophisticated, and Suzette’s husband remains blind to the failing family dynamics, Suzette starts to fear that there’s something seriously wrong, and that maybe home isn’t the best place for their baby girl after all.

Montauk- Nicola Harrison

41150486Montauk, Long Island, 1938.

A simple town on the brink of a glamorous future.

A marriage drifting apart.

A life on the edge of what is and what could be…

An epic and cinematic novel by debut author Nicola Harrison, Montauk captures the glamour and extravagance of a summer by the sea with the story of a woman torn between the life she chose and the life she desires.

Montauk, Long Island, 1938.

For three months, this humble fishing village will serve as the playground for New York City’s wealthy elite. Beatrice Bordeaux was looking forward to a summer of reigniting the passion between her and her husband, Harry. Instead, tasked with furthering his investment interest in Montauk as a resort destination, she learns she’ll be spending twelve weeks sequestered with the high society wives at The Montauk Manor—a two-hundred room seaside hotel—while Harry pursues other interests in the city.

College educated, but raised a modest country girl in Pennsylvania, Bea has never felt fully comfortable among these privileged women, whose days are devoted not to their children but to leisure activities and charities that seemingly benefit no one but themselves. She longs to be a mother herself, as well as a loving wife, but after five years of marriage she remains childless while Harry is increasingly remote and distracted. Despite lavish parties at the Manor and the Yacht Club, Bea is lost and lonely and befriends the manor’s laundress whose work ethic and family life stir memories of who she once was.

As she drifts further from the society women and their preoccupations and closer toward Montauk’s natural beauty and community spirit, Bea finds herself drawn to a man nothing like her husband –stoic, plain spoken and enigmatic. Inspiring a strength and courage she had almost forgotten, his presence forces her to face a haunting tragedy of her past and question her future.

Desperate to embrace moments of happiness, no matter how fleeting, she soon discovers that such moments may be all she has, when fates conspire to tear her world apart…

Rags to riches by Casey L bond

Other day someone in a Facebook group I’m In called the owlcrate society mentioned this for the Kindle. I didn’t have the kindle app so I had re get it. But the cover is cool and the thing that had me hooked was the person friends with the author said was a Cinderella retelling. Right then and there had me hook, line, and sinker.

Ella carina is the crown princess of aelawyn and knows she is royality since her father king of the land shows in his castle but not to any of his people and even at times his daughters. Till one day they are all killed Ella’s mom, sis and dad and she is line survivor of the Killing. The king of New kingdom offers her choice marry the person she was betrothed to or can go into hiding asa peasant and she chooses the second. But a very fun and pleasant life and glad to have read it and hope I find many more Cinderella retellings. 5/5 stars ~~~~JUSTIN

Going thru you learn of the twists in the book and was less of a retelling but a story of nice contemporary of royality style choices and that of poor farm girl. So overall I still loved it. Only gotta say one thing was in like a lot of contemporary’s I feel very fast progress from just seeing each other to not sharing to much info and just short hanging to “love” each other but after middle part I loved the chemistry on. S

Darker by E.L. James

Ahh yes that’s right it’s another fifty shades book ;). 50/50 split for people a lot are saying nooooo my eyes. Take example my friend jennifer and her doggie blogger Bella from a Bella faerie tale she will be like my eyes noooo!! While I’m here yes yes yes. But going in I waited 2.5 years for this book that’s a life time in book years atleast though not GOT author who takes almost 5-10 years. But this is book 2 from christians pov. The first book left a tad later than Anastasia’s pov which I find oddly interesting. One thing going for book one was big gaps between Anastasia and Christians so was like reading a whole new book, unlike where I will say not going into much detail it is his pov for second but but to the extreme sounded like reading book 2 over again like i was Anastasia than Christian. Also like most shade books the writing is not very good but gotta love it for what it is I think if still are reading you knew this already. But some of the things I still loved is when Christian is not with Ana can see what he does he compassionate, besides so demanding. But get to see the scenes that we didn’t froms Ana’s like the fight with mrs Lincoln at christians party to Leila. But yea over all 4/5 stars since I can’t get enough but hoping last book isn’t 3 years away like book 1 to 2 was.

4/5 stars ~~~~ JUSTIN

The Heartbreak Cure by Amanda Ashby

The Heartbreak CureAn excitedly fast and romantic read with a swoon worthy bad boy.

Goodreads Summary:

How to get over a heartbreak:

Step one: Eat your body weight in brownies.

Step two: Throw yourself into your dreams of becoming a famous writer.

Step three: Beg your (hottie) ex-neighbor to act as your fake boyfriend.

Step four: Skip step three unless you’re ready for some serious fallout.

After being dumped and humiliated over the summer, Cat Turner does what any sane girl would do. She asks bad boy Alex Locke to be her fake boyfriend and show the world (and her editor at the school newspaper) that she’s fine. Problem is, the more time she spends with Alex, the more she risks getting her heart broken. For real this time.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a bad boy who will melt your heart, brownies, and witty banter. One, two, or all three might prove addictive…

Thank you to Entangled Teen and NetGalley for providing me with an early copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book was cute and most definitely swoon worthy! I finished this book in one day, and for me, that’s a huge feat, as I am not that fast of a reader. But The Heartbreak Cure was a fast and wonderful read. And the plot and characters were beautifully written. I enjoyed this book so much that when I had to put it down for work or school, I felt like I was dealing with separation anxiety. I had to know what happened next so when I was not reading this book, I was thinking about the characters and what was going to happen next. I am not a huge contemporary reader, so the fact that The Heartbreak Cure stayed on my mind days later after reading the book, demonstrates just how good this book is.

What I enjoyed about The Heartbreak Cure:

  • The swoon worthy romance: The romance between Cat and Alex is full of tension and swooning moments. Alex already likes Cat in a more-than-a-friend way, so knowing that from the beginning definitely adds to the romance throughout the book. I also liked how Cat liked Alex for who he is and did not try to change him; that is romance right there, and it was beautifully written.
  • The relationships between family and friends: I really enjoyed reading about Cat’s relationships with her mom and best friend. These relationships added a balance to the story, so the book was not all romance, but rather a mix of romance with healthy relationships between family and friends.
  • Cat and Alex: There is no doubt that I loved the two main characters. They both have passion for different things, but those passions helped shape each character, and it very much worked for this story. Also, Cat was dealing with her present issues while Alex was dealing with the demons from his past. Both of their issues helped bring them together.

Overall, Amanda Ashby wrote a wonderful book, and if you are looking for a new romantic read with a swoony bad boy, a relatable main character, and enjoyable banter, then The Heartbreak Cure is for you! The Heartbreak Cure by Amanda Ashby releases this week!

Thanks to reading The Heartbreak Cure, I will definitely be reading Amanda Ashby’s other books. The characters from The Heartbreak Cure are still in my mind days later, so this is a book you will remember!

NeverSea by Jenetta Penner & David R. Bernstein

NeverSeaA uniquely beautiful retelling of two beloved fairytale characters.

Can a pure, but broken heart fuel the war to control the NeverSea?

“The Little Mermaid & Peter Pan together in a sci-fi retelling.”

Forced under the sea, seventeen-year-old Arya fights, alongside her sisters, to take down the Syndicate—a group looking to genetically redesign humanity against their will. When a routine patrol goes horribly wrong, she reunites with Peter, the ousted former leader of the Lost Boys. Arya and Peter’s tortured past, filled with genetic experimentation, fuel their need for justice.

Years earlier, Peter left young Arya when she needed him the most, leaving her torn from James, the love of her life.

Now, Arya has no choice, but to trust Peter or risk losing everything.

In a future where a constantly rising sea has swallowed nearly all the land on Earth, Arya and Peter fight to regain control of Neverland, a massive floating settlement, now controlled by the Syndicate.

The abilities forced on them years ago, are now the weapons they need to fight back.

NeverSea is a uniquely woven retelling about Arya and Peter, two young people who were experimented on for years before escaping. In order to save their home, they will both have to use the powers that made them different, that made them weapons.

*I received an ARC at no cost from the author.*

This book was such a fun ride! I loved the idea of weaving two fairytale retellings together, and mixing in the genres dystopian and sci-fi. Reading from both Arya and Peter’s perspectives really brought the story together, and I was able to watch as the characters developed.

What I enjoyed the most about NeverSea:

  • The fairytale retellings: I thoroughly enjoyed this unique retelling of The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan. NeverSea is unlike any other retelling I have read; it was a perfect blend of fairytale retelling and sci-fi, two genres I hold close to my heart.
  • The battle scenes: the authors did a fantastic job writing the action scenes. There was not too much description and not too little. I felt like I was there battling alongside Arya and Peter!
  • The intense moments: Throughout the story, there are many moments where the characters have heated conversations, or in this case, intense moments. These intense scenes helped explain some of the tensions between the characters and the past and why those characters are the way they are.

Though I enjoyed NeverSea, I would have liked to have seen more of the tension between Arya and her love interest. I won’t spoil it, but something happens at the beginning of the novel that creates tension between the two characters; I would have liked to see that tension and the emotions last longer than they did. I would have also enjoyed to read more about the characters backgrounds and what happened in the early years before Arya and Perter become test subjects.

NeverSea is fast-paced and leaves you wanting more and wondering what will happen to these beloved characters. I will definitely be reading the next book! If you enjoy fairytale retellings, intense battle scenes, and beautifully described characters, NeverSea is a book for you!

NeverSea by Jenetta Penner and David R. Bernstein releases November 29, 2017 on Kindle.

Trapped In Silver- Emily Sowden

“That cold, crippling terror choked me again as I felt someone else’s presence bent over the body on its other side. Our faces couldn’t have been more than a foot apart as wretched breath washed over my skin. Instinct took over and I was running. I fled from the tunnel and veered left, sprinting back the way I came.”

I was supposed to be following along with the read-a-thon with the publishing house, but I couldn’t stop reading this. Every time I put this book down, it kept calling my name and it was all I could think about. I was amazed, shocked, and ecstatic as the pages went by. This was not what I was expecting… in the best way possible.

Ava doesn’t remember much from her mother. She passed away at a young age and Ava had to help her dad take over. As other girls were learning how to be the ideal housewife, Ava was learning how to care for the family farm and bring home income to survive. But to do the things asked of her, she had to disguise her appearance and act the part of a boy.

As a present, she received a silver necklace and she never takes it off. If it is attempted to be taken off, a weight sits in her chest and she can’t breathe. This seems to be her lifeline.

Days move into weeks and that leads into months, her dad is still nowhere to be found. It’s just her and her brother, Roan in the farm. But things aren’t as peaceful as she would have hoped.

A cow get ma slaughtered in the barn, trance things lurk in the night, and Ava needs to be rescued from evil men trying to harm her.

On the night of the annual ball for women to find a mate, she meets a man that loves her for who she is. She’s different from all the other girls and Ric is instantly smitten. As he escorts her home, a terrible feeling comes to Ava as they take a shortcut through the dilapidated town. Things come out from the shadows and she is in for the fight of her life.

As soon as Ava believes that she’s going to make it home, she gets trapped by some of these berserkers. Ethan, a man who has saved her before, saves her again but she’s badly injured. He travels to his home and brings her along to help her heal. As she wakes up, she realizes that she isn’t in the right place. As she slowly pieces things together, its fight or flight and now she’s not only trying to save herself, but an entire community whom she’s grown to love.

With secrets hidden and now found, getting ready for battle, will this be enough to escape the berserkers and finally claim what truly belongs to Ava?

This was one of those books that I couldn’t put down. I’ve lost some sleep trying to get to the bottom of this and it swept me off of my feet. The horror feel, the mystery, and the intrigue will leave you guessing right up until the very end. As soon as a secret was uncovered and dealt with, something even bigger came along to capture your breath.

What kind of bugged me was the sexual tension between Ava and Ethan! They got so close and then nothing. They better get it on soon because they both need it. I’m not sure why it needed to be added into the story. It would have been fantastic without it too.

I was shocked because this wasn’t what I was expecting at all, but I need more. Can’t wait to read the second book.

Thanks, Oftomes Publishing!
