It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 11/11/19

This week I’m going to read a book that I started on Saturday, an amazing arc that I stumbled upon, and a book that I received from BookWorm Box. And maybe… just maybe if I have extra time I’ll read a book that I won from Goodreads.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 11/4/19

I didn’t read as much as I wanted to last week. So this week I’m reading something that I started on Friday and some arcs that I received in the mail.

The Institute- Stephen King

48284797. sy475 From #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King, the most riveting and unforgettable story of kids confronting evil since It—publishing just as the second part of It, the movie, lands in theaters.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. “You check in, but you don’t check out.”

In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.

As psychically terrifying as Firestarter, and with the spectacular kid power of It, The Institute is Stephen King’s gut-wrenchingly dramatic story of good vs. evil in a world where the good guys don’t always win.

Jane Anonymous- Laurie Faria Stolarz

37650881. sy475 Bestselling author Laurie Faria Stolarz returns with Jane Anonymous, a gripping tale of a seventeen-year-old girl’s kidnapping and her struggle to fit back into her life after she escapes.

Then, “Jane” was just your typical 17-year-old in a typical New England suburb getting ready to start her senior year. She had a part-time job she enjoyed, an awesome best friend, overbearing but loving parents, and a crush on a boy who was taking her to see her favorite band. She never would’ve imagined that in her town where nothing ever happens, a series of small coincidences would lead to a devastating turn of events that would forever change her life.

Now, it’s been three months since “Jane” escaped captivity and returned home. Three months of being that girl who was kidnapped, the girl who was held by a “monster.” Three months of writing down everything she remembered from those seven months locked up in that stark white room. But, what if everything you thought you knew―everything you thought you experienced―turned out to be a lie?

Q&A with Amy Fellner Dominy

Thank you so much for joining us, Amy! It was a pleasure interviewing you!

  1. Announcing Trouble is your latest book, which I cannot wait to read! What was your inspiration behind Announcing Trouble?
It was summer and in my house that means baseball was on the TV. My husband is a huge fan and my son played baseball through college so I’ve been to a ton of games. I liked the idea of writing about a ballplayer, but I wanted to do something different than other books I’d read. That’s when I got the idea about sports broadcasting. Josie and Mai appeared in my writer brain—I have no idea where they came from—and I think Garrett was living somewhere in my heart just waiting for a chance to be my book boyfriend.
  2. Announcing Trouble appears to be a more light-hearted contemporary compared to your previous YA books. Was the writing process any different for this book?
It’s definitely more light-hearted and that’s for a reason. When I started this book, I was in a blue mood and I wanted to cheer myself up. I just felt in my heart that it was time to write something full of fun and romance and happily-ever-afters. Writing a book that was everything I love to read made the process a lot of fun. It definitely helped get me back to a happier place.
  3. What is your favorite part of the writing/publishing process?
There are a few things that spring to mind.
The first hint of an idea. The characters peeking out to say hello. The lure of a shiny new thing and the possibility of what might unfold. I love when I’m struggling over a scene and suddenly the solution hits me. I love when I get to that point in a novel and I know I’m going to reach “THE END.” (Not every novel that I start is one that I finish.) And I love when the book finally comes out and even though I shouldn’t, I read reviews and it’s an amazing feeling when someone you’ve never met tells you they love your characters as much as you do.
  4. If you could have your book made into anything (Broadway musical, TV show, movie, ballet dance, soap opera, etc.), which would you choose and why?
TV show would be awesome. Because then the story could continue and grow. I’d love to see what happens with my characters down the road!
  5. What is a quirky or unique habit you have?
I talk out loud when I write. I think because the story plays like a movie in my head and I’m almost dictating the soundtrack to my fingers—if that doesn’t sound too weird. I know I should work from home, but I still go to coffee shops a lot. I figure I’m no louder than two people having a conversation at another table, right? And so far, no one has questioned what I’m doing.
  6. There’s a ton of aspiring authors out there. What advice would you give them?
Stick to the three Ps: Perspiration. Persistence. Patience. There are no short cuts. You have to do the work, you have to stick with it, and you have to give yourself time to learn the craft. But if you do, the publishing world is a big one and there is room for you!

First Line Friday – Kiss of the Royal – Lindsey Duga

Happy Friday, bookworms! And welcome to First Line Friday, where we share the first line in a book! What we’ve been doing lately is sharing the first sentence of an upcoming novel.

The novel this week is Kiss of the Royal by Lindsey Duga, which comes out July 5 by Entangled Teen, so you only have to wait a couple more weeks.

“By the seventh day of constant agony, I wished I hadn’t already killed the dwarf who cast this locking curse on me.”

Hmmm, that sounds interesting. Who else is intrigued by reading the first line?

32173635 In the war against the Forces of Darkness, the Royals are losing. Princess Ivy is determined to end this centuries-long conflict once and for all, so her new battle partner must succeed where the others failed. Prince Zach’s unparalleled skill with a sword, enhanced by Ivy’s magic Kiss, should make them an unstoppable pair—but try convincing Zach of that.

Prince Zach has spent his life preparing for battle, but he would rather be branded a heretic than use his lips as nothing more than a way to transfer magic. A kiss is a symbol of love, and love is the most powerful weapon they have—but try convincing Ivy of that.

With the fate of their world on the line, the battlefield has become a testing ground, and only one of them can be right. Falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan—but try convincing their hearts of that.

I’ll actually be starting Kiss of the Royal this weekend while I am at ALA, which I am super-stoked about attending! Last year was my first year attending ALA and it was the best book conference I’ve ever been to. And that’s not just because the books were great, but also because my anxiety levels were way down compared to the year I attended BookCon (which I will never attend again, might I add).

If you’re going to be at ALA, let me or Stacy know! We would both love to meet you!

Have a great weekend, bookworms!

*Arc Review* Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf

35144326

Title: Bring Me Their Hearts

Author: Sara Wolf

Publisher: Entangled Teen

Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult, Romance

Release Date: June 5, 2018

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Zera is a Heartless – the immortal, unageing soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

Literally.

Thank you Entangled Teen for sending me a copy of Bring Me Their Hearts!

My Review

This book was phenomenal. A one-of-a-kind story that will captivate you and leave you wondering: “where has this book been all my life?” I’m pretty sure after reading Bring Me Their Hearts, I became a Heartless. Or, at least, I’ll be one until I get the next two books. My life currently feels incomplete without them.

Sara’s book will be one I will never forget. The story is wholly original and unlike anything I’ve read in YA. Bring Me Their Hearts will take hold of your heart (not literally, but figuratively) and won’t let it go. I was (and I still am) so enthralled with this book.

1Zera is one of the best fictional characters I have ever read. She’s sassy, witty, brave, stubborn, unique, and so much more. She knows what she wants, even when it means doing something that could hurt the people closest to her. She’s the type of girl I looked up to when I was little, and still kind of do. Zera’s main goal is to get her heart back, no matter the cost. She thought it was going to be easy, stealing the Prince’s heart. But no heart is every easy to steal.

I really liked the world building, especially when it came to learning about the witches and Heartless and where magic comes from. The history about the Royal Court and the Heartless is wonderfully juicy. The interactions between Zera and her peers, especially Lucas, are mesmerizing and sometimes hilarious. I don’t think I’ve laughed so much while reading a book than I did during Sara’s.

Bring Me Their Hearts is everything I thought it would be and more. Breathtaking. Addictive. Charming. Captivating. Enchanting. There’s not enough words to describe this book. And that twist toward the end…OH.MY.GOSH. I was on the train when I read the last few chapters and I had the hardest time being quiet and not being an emotional wreck.

I wish there was more I could say, but this book left me speechless (and it appears just writing about the book is doing the same thing). You are most definitely not going to want to miss out on this beauty, trust me.

Bring Me Their Hearts comes out TOMORROW, so make sure to pick up your copy! And check out Sara Wolf’s tour schedule below!

 About Zombie Abbey:

And the three teenage Clarke sisters thought what they’d wear to dinner was their biggest problem…

Lady Kate, the entitled eldest.

Lady Grace, lost in the middle and wishing she were braver.

Lady Lizzy, so endlessly sunny, it’s easy to underestimate her.

Then there’s Will Harvey, the proud, to-die-for—and possibly die with!—stable boy; Daniel Murray, the resourceful second footman with a secret; Raymond Allen, the unfortunate-looking young duke; and Fanny Rogers, the unsinkable kitchen maid.

Upstairs! Downstairs! Toss in some farmers and villagers!

None of them ever expected to work together for any reason.

But none of them had ever seen anything like this.

My Review of Zombie Abbey

Zombie Abbey was such a fun read! This wonderful book is a mash up of Downtown Abbey and Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (which I love). I am a huge zombie fan (yes, I watch The Walking Dead), so Zombie Abbey was right up my alley and a book I was looking forward to devouring.ZombieAbbey-ReviewQuote1

Zombie Abbey has a wonderful mix of historical horror, romance, and some humor. The first few chapters did take me a few minutes to grip, as I haven’t read a historical book in quite some time. With that being said though, it was easy enough to fall into the writing and the story. The writing was exactly how I would imagine the 1920s would be like; the author did a great job of describing the time and the characters. Lauren Baratz-Logsted gives each reader the sense of what that time period was like; in my opinion, I felt like I was living in that time period with how wonderfully descriptive the book was.

The Clarke family is the main focus of the story, mainly the three sisters. The chapters that were made of the sisters’ point of views were light and refreshing, and I looked forward to reading the chapters in their perspectives. There were times where I got confused because the point of view does jump around, but my confusion was an easy fix.

When the zombie action came into play, that’s when I felt the real story took off and the characters started to really develop. Zombie Abbey is not like The Walking Dead, where zombie hoards are at every corner; Zombie Abbey was more of a slow burn, in the sense that zombies did not hurtle or huddle together. I really liked that because it seemed more realistic to me, especially for that time period.

All in all, Zombie Abbey was an exhilarating read, one that I would highly recommend to readers who love zombie books and stories that take place in another time period. If the synopsis and/or my review piqued your interest, check out the excerpt below! And don’t forget to enter the giveaway!! 🙂

Excerpt from Zombie Abbey:

Dr. Webb was lurching toward the church out of the mist, something terribly off about his halting gait. More specifically, he was lurching toward Mr. Young.

“Are you all right, Dr. Webb?” Mr. Young called, the former joy in his voice replaced now with concern for the other man.

“Merry!” Lady Grace called out a warning. “Don’t go any farther!”

“But can’t you all see?” Mr. Young said, still walking forward. “Poor Dr. Webb is sick.”

Yes, Dr. Webb was sick. His clothing and general appearance were all disheveled. And he smelled bad, too, the duke realized, as a rotting stench made its way to his nostrils, which flared in response. Why, the smell was similar to that which had enveloped the dead valet, his dead valet, yesterday. Perhaps Dr. Webb had acquired the wretched smell while tending to some poor person in the village?

Dr. Webb still lurched, his arms spreading out now as Mr. Young approached.

“Merry, please!” Lady Grace cried. Then she moved to step forward herself, no doubt to try to stop Mr. Young, but Benedict Clarke held her back, catching her with one arm around the waist.

And now Mr. Young was opening his arms wide, too, as though to warmly greet the returning doctor, but when their bodies met and the doctor embraced him, he immediately began to chew on the closest part of Mr. Young’s body that was available to him, which, in this case, happened to be his upper arm.

The duke watched, frozen in horror as no doubt the others were, too, as the doctor chewed through Mr. Young’s jacket and shirt, straight down to the flesh beneath. It might have been almost comical, were it not so downright horrifying.

Among the things you never expect to see in life: one human being attempting to feed on another like an animal.

About Risen:

Fans of Vampire Diaries and Twilight will be thirsting for this latest vampire addiction…

Risen2

My aunt has been kidnapped by vampires, and it’s up to me to save her. Only…I had no idea vampires existed. None. Nada. I’m more of a reader than a fighter, and even though I’d been wishing to escape my boring existence in the middle of nowhere, I’d give anything to have it back now if it meant my aunt was safe.

Then there’s the vampire Sebastian, who seems slightly nicer than most of the bloodsuckers I’ve run into so far. Yes, he’s the hottest being I’ve ever come across, but there’s no way I can trust him. He swears he’s helping me get answers, but there’s more to his story. Now I’m a key pawn in a raging vampire war, and I need to pick the right ally.

But my chances of surviving this war are slim at best, when the side I choose might be the one that wants me dead the most.

My Review

When I look for a new book to read, I look for originality, spunk, and, a strong plot. Risen by Cole Gibsen had all of that and more.

Risen was such a delicious read! I had a difficult time putting the book down, and when IRisen7 had to, I was wishing I was reading! I absolutely loved the plot and the intricate details.

I enjoyed how the characters were easily relatable and actually acted their age. I’ve read some books where I can’t relate to a single character or don’t understand why a character is acting a certain way. I did not have that issue with Risen. And the chemistry between Charlie and her love interest was to die for; the scenes that involved the two of them, it was like the electricity between them was jumping off the page. It was electrifying.

Risen captivated me from the first page to the last line. It’s been a while since I have read a good vampire story, so I was very pleased with this story. The in-depth research and creativity that went into the different races and the all-out vampire was was wholly original and unique.

If you are looking for a new vampire book that will have you glued to your seat and your eyes hooked on the pages, then Risen by Cole Gibsen is the book for you! And if you love hot vampires and humor and sizzling scenes, then grab your copy today!
