My Review

They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart.
And they never will.

The Shadows Between Us is by far one of my favorite standalone fantasy books. There’s always going to be books that make it almost impossible for you to put down. That was the case with The Shadows Between Us. I could not put this book down. And even after days of finishing the story, I can’t keep the characters off my mind and out of my heart.

“I know when I’ve been beaten, and I have barely even started.”

The characters are strong and ruthless. I loved how this book was pitched as a Slytherin romance because that’s exactly what it is. Both characters are cunning and vengeful and beautifully illustrated. Alessandra has no problem being murderous, especially when she needs to kill someone for something she needs. She’s a dark and morally gray character, but that’s one of the reasons that makes this book so good. She has no issue showing the world who she is and that’s what made her such an enjoyable character for me. Levenseller wrote a book with characters that could be hard to love and difficult for readers to see the logic behind most of their actions. But she wrote a book that’s so unbelievably good!

And the romance is definitely worth all the swooning. It’s raw and fresh and built on deception, but I feel that’s how a good villain romance usually starts. And this villainous romance is one readers will not soon forget. Even though Alessandra wants to kill the king, she never expected to feel a certain way about him, a feeling that could potentially put her whole plan at risk.

“Rest assured, the only dangerous thing out here is me.”

I love how this story is dark and unapologetic. It’s a story that’s perfect for readers who are looking for a dark world and deliciously vengeful characters. It’s a book I didn’t realize I needed until I read the first page and literally went “WOW.” The Shadows Between Us is a powerful story that doesn’t just focus on what Allesandra is trying to destroy/build; it also focuses on the blossoming of a new relationship and both characters’ pasts and futures. It focuses on how dark characters can continuously stay dark but find a light inside that darkness, a light that shows that each character is not as corrupted as they may seem.

“Don’t be afraid of who you are. Say what you wish. Be who you wish. Don’t try to be someone else.”

And once again, Levenseller has created a world that is dark and vicious but overall beautiful. Her world building is exquisite and completely fits the darkness of each character. She’s created a world of deceitfulness but also a world that has the ability to change. It’s unlike any fantasy world I’ve seen and I loved that aspect of the story. I loved how everything was different from most fantasy stories.

Levenseller has created an unforgettable story with characters that will surprise you in the most unsettling ways. It’s a story that is worth all the hype. The Shadows Between Us is easily a book I can read over and over again. This book is perfect for those readers looking for a dark and devious tale.

Title: The Sound of the Stars

Author: Alechia Dow

Publisher: Inkyard Press

Release Date: February 25, 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Sci-Fi, Fantasy

Synopsis:

Can a girl who risks her life for books and an alien who loves forbidden pop music work together to save humanity?

Two years ago, a misunderstanding between the leaders of Earth and the invading Ilori resulted in the deaths of one-third of the world’s population.

Seventeen-year-old Janelle “Ellie” Baker survives in an Ilori-controlled center in New York City. Deemed dangerously volatile because of their initial reaction to the invasion, humanity’s emotional transgressions are now grounds for execution. All art, books and creative expression are illegal, but Ellie breaks the rules by keeping a secret library. When a book goes missing, Ellie is terrified that the Ilori will track it back to her and kill her.

Born in a lab, M0Rr1S (Morris) was raised to be emotionless. When he finds Ellie’s illegal library, he’s duty-bound to deliver her for execution. The trouble is, he finds himself drawn to human music and in desperate need of more. They’re both breaking the rules for love of art—and Ellie inspires the same feelings in him that music does.

Ellie’s—and humanity’s—fate rests in the hands of an alien she should fear. M0Rr1S has a lot of secrets, but also a potential solution—thousands of miles away. The two embark on a wild and dangerous road trip with a bag of books and their favorite albums, all the while making a story and a song of their own that just might save them both.

My Review

“Humanity’s better in stories. That’s why I saved as many books as I could, basically saving the humanity worth saving.”

The Sound of Stars beautifully weaves different genres together to create a character-driven story with shocking plot twists. It’s a science fiction story that surpassed my expectations and captured my attention from the very first sentence. I was enamored with the characters and the world, and I cannot wait for the sequel.

Ellie is a girl after my own heart. The world she lives in, now Ilori-controlled, demands that all art, music, and books are illegal and grounds for execution if found in a human’s possession. But Ellie keeps a secret library, which I know is what I would probably do, even if it meant certain death. But books hold truth and emotion, which is a reason why Ellie keeps them. She’s a strong-minded character who wants to remember humanity for it’s creativity, not it’s captivity. She’s a character that I believe many people could relate to, including myself.

Ellie’s relationship with M0Rr1S is interesting, but also heartfelt. He may have been created in a lab and born to be emotionless, but he discovers that he possesses the same emotions and feelings that a human does. He loves music and starts to grow a bond with Ellie. This bond has the potential to save the world. Their relationship is the key to uniting two species and bringing back creativity into the world. But most of all, their relationship has the power to save each other.

“I’m alive, and I’m strong. My heart isn’t broken, and I hold my dreams close to me. And I’ve already lived in a cage for years; I won’t stay in one anymore. Not when I can save and change the world.”

Even though I loved the characterization of Ellie and M0Rr1S, I have to say that I loved the plot twists even more. There were some plot twists I saw coming and some I didn’t and the ones I couldn’t figure out beforehand were surprising. I love a book with a good plot twist, but one that has multiple makes for a fun and shocking ride. And none of the plot twists were disappointing.

Most people who read my reviews are familiar with how much I love world building. Great books have great world building. And the world building in this book did not disappoint. I felt like I had a front-row seat in this world; I could easily picture this world and its inhabitants. The world building is overall my favorite thing about this book. Everything is so intricate and magnificently designed that it’s hard not to love this world and the author’s writing. This book, overall, is pleasantly surprising and exquisitely written.

The Sound of Stars is a strong debut that I find would be perfect for many science fiction readers. It’s a book that can easily resonate with readers for different reasons. This book, this story, felt real with real and personal characters, and that alone makes me excited for the sequel.

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Retellings

Synopsis:

A must-read for fans of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse, transforming The Hunchback of Notre Dame into a powerful tundra-inspired epic.

Before the massacre at Nariin, Enebish was one of the greatest warriors in the Sky King’s Imperial Army: a rare and dangerous Night Spinner, blessed with the ability to control the threads of darkness. Now, she is known as Enebish the Destroyer―a monster and murderer, banished to a monastery for losing control of her power and annihilating a merchant caravan.

Guilt stricken and scarred, Enebish tries to be grateful for her sanctuary, until her adoptive sister, Imperial Army commander Ghoa, returns from the war front with a tantalizing offer. If Enebish can capture the notorious criminal, Temujin, whose band of rebels has been seizing army supply wagons, not only will her crimes be pardoned, she will be reinstated as a warrior.

Enebish eagerly accepts. But as she hunts Temujin across the tundra, she discovers the tides of war have shifted, and the supplies he’s stealing are the only thing keeping thousands of shepherds from starving. Torn between duty and conscience, Enebish must decide whether to put her trust in the charismatic rebel or her beloved sister. My Review

“Darkness waits like a devil outside my window – curling its shadowy fingertips beneath the shutters, drawing its inky claws across the latch, raising every hair on my body as temptation trickles down my spine.”

Night Spinner is one of those tales that’s hard to forget after reading. I have yet to read a retelling of Hunchback of Notre Dame, and I was blown away by this powerful retelling. If Night Spinner is not on your radar, I’d definitely make sure it’s added; it’s a story many readers will love!

I am not what they make of me, but what I make of me.

Enebish, in this story, is Quasimodo from the classic. She’s an ex-warrior, someone that many people identify as a monster and murderer with rare and dangerous magic. Yet she’s stricken with guilt, which is a leading factor as to why she accepts her adoptive sister’s offer to capture a criminal. But Enebish soon starts to realize that not everything goes as planned and not everyone can be trusted.

“The time for timidness has long since passed. We must all take risks. Make sacrifices.”

Enebish is an exceptionally well-written character. She’s strong but fights her past demons every day, struggling with finding ways to move on. But she’s not a quitter, she’s a fighter and she refuses to give up. Her characterization makes for a fast-paced story with incredible action. And the many characters she meets on her travels (and the characters from her past) help shape and define who she is and she becomes. Each character plays a different role in Enebish’s story, and each character, in their way, is captivating.

You miss many things when your world is so small.

The world building is absolutely breathtaking, with visionary descriptions and lush prose. I felt immediately part of the world and landscape, and immediately part of this exciting story. Thorley’s writing is what truly brought this story to life for me; her writing is exceptional. She knows how to weave together a remarkable story with unforgettable characters.

Night Spinner easily became one of those stories that captured my attention from the beginning. It’s a fierce retelling that is sure to enamor any reader who picks it up. I believe this is a tale I’ll always recommend, as it’s definitely found a place in my bookish heart.

My Review

“They’d play like Diavala and be tricksters all the way.”

Ink in the Blood is one of those stories that holds a powerful meaning and can easily maintain a reader’s attention. I was pleasantly amazed with how this story unfolded. I enjoyed the characters, the array of LGBT representation, but I overall enjoyed most the bond between two girls and their fight for their own destiny.

The writing is both lyrical and poetic. Honestly, the writing is what really drew me into the story (once I started to read, the beautiful cover initially captured my attention). The author has such lush writing that I could easily imagine the world and the characters. I was enamored with this story and the dark world building. Everything is so beautifully described and depicted.

“That time, his smile almost killed her.”

I really enjoyed the magic system in this story. Ink magic in the form of tattoos is unique and quite intriguing; it’s such a neat idea to think of ink in someone’s veins. But at the heart of this story lies a bigger, more meaningful type of magic: freedom. Celia and her best friend, Anya, want to escape the Profeta, which works out well for them when a traveling theater troupe comes through their town. But what Celia wasn’t expecting was to be followed by the Divine; and Celia has now given the Divine the perfect opportunity to spread her mendacious influence.

“Only the damned speak with devils.”

I won’t lie, I was a bit surprised in the direction this story went, in a good way. I wasn’t expecting the story to be so dark, but it fit so well with the plot and the characters. The concept behind the people wanting to create a world of fear is beautifully done and believable, and Smejkal did a wonderful job creating that overall dark vibe of the story. She easily depicts how difficult it is to create a future for yourself when the Divine wants your freedom and when people live in a world of constant fear.

“Sometimes what looks like betrayal is actually the biggest sacrifice.”

I have to say that my favorite part about this story was Celia’s and Anya’s relationship. Their friendship meant everything in this story; both girls were there for one another and fought for each other. That’s the type of bond I love to see in fantasy stories, and Kim Smejkal did a great job illustrating that bond. Both girls also want to change their fate; they each want to be able to pick their future instead of live in the one already dictated for them. I loved seeing how each girl overcame their struggles and fought for something they truly believed was possible. Their story provided hope and

Overall, I was impressed with this debut novel. The bond between Celia and Anya is phenomenal and really ties this story together. This is a wonderfully-done fantasy debut, and I can’t wait to see what happens next with the characters.

“Fierce and unrelenting…Do yourself a favor and get lost in this beautiful book!” — Tomi Adeyemi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Children of Blood and Bone

Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice, Adalyn Grace’s All the Stars and Teeth is a thrilling fantasy for fans of Stephanie Garber’s Caraval and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series.

She will reign.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.
