*Arc Review* The Princess Will Save You (#1)- Sarah Henning

52378724. sx318 sy475 A PRINCESS
A STABLE BOY
A QUEST

When her father dies, Princess Amarande is given an ultimatum: Marry the leader of one of the four neighboring kingdoms, or lose her crown—and possibly her life. And to force her hand, her beloved, the stable boy Luca, is kidnapped.

But Amarande was raised to be a warrior, not a sacrifice.

And nothing will stop her from saving her true love and rescuing her kingdom.

The acclaimed author of Sea Witch turns the classic damsel-in-distress tale on its head with this story of adventure, identity, and love.

My Review

“True love is the most powerful force on this earth- we just forget it because those with power here deal in fear rather than love.”

Princess Bride GIF - Princess Bride Wesley - Discover & Share GIFs

The Princess Bride is a classic and was an instant favorite when I was younger and it still is to this day. So when I heard that Henning was writing a strong feminist retelling, I was nervously excited because those are some pretty big shoes to fill. But Henning stepped up to the plate, knocked it out of the park, and left me in awe.

What if Buttercup saved Westley? This gender-swapped fantasy retelling will let you know that you should never underestimate the power of a female.

King Sendoa of Ardenia dies suddenly, leaving Princess Amarande the only heir to the throne. But since she’s female and not yet wed, the Kingdom can’t be hers until some of the requirements are met. Princes from other territories come far and wide to ask to take her hand in marriage but she wants the rules to change. She wants to rule Ardenia alone until she finds the right person and time to marry.

To force her into marrying someone she despises, Luca, her best friend and beloved is kidnapped.

She was always taught to fight for what she believes in and never sacrifice for something less. There is only one thing to do. That’s to put her life on the line to save Luca and her Kingdom. Nothing or no one will step in her way.

Okay, wow! This was epic. This was one of the best unique retellings that I’ve ever read. Henning took a classic that is close to my heart and turned it into something that is her own while also twisting the damsel in distress tale overboard. You’ll be amazed at the power of her words.

Princess Amarande was such a badass and strong character. She’s who we need at the head of this feminist revolution and I’m glad she’s now apart of my life. She also has made a special place in my heart. Her story and dedication for what she believes in will make you proud to be reading her story. She’s one character that will always stick with you.

The Princess Will Save You is the Princess Bride reimagining that we all needed. My mind is still blown by what I have read. This is one everyone needs to experience. It’s one that has left me speechless.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 5/11/20

Hello and happy Monday.

These days seem to be zooming past so quickly.

This week I’m going to read a book that I’ve won on Twitter, an arc that I’ve picked up at ALA Midwinter, and a book that I’ve owned for quite some time.

What are you reading?

The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly- Jamie Pacton

49952514. sx318 sy475 Working as a wench ― i.e. waitress ― at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.

Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first.

Moxie meets A Knight’s Tale as Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.

Cinderella is Dead- Kalynn Bayron

51079282. sx318 sy475 “Wholly original and captivating.” – Brigid Kemmerer, New York Times bestselling author of A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Girls team up to overthrow the kingdom in this unique and powerful retelling of Cinderella from a stunning new voice that’s perfect for fans of A Curse So Dark and Lonely.

It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.

Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all–and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew . . .

This fresh take on a classic story will make readers question the tales they’ve been told, and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them.

Sorority- Genevieve Sly Crane

36374015. sy475 Sisterhood is forever…whether you like it or not.

Prep meets Girls in White Dresses in Genevieve Sly Crane’s deliciously addictive, voyeuristic exploration of female friendship and coming of age that will appeal to anyone who has ever been curious about what happens in a sorority house.

Twinsets and pearls, secrets and kinship, rituals that hold sisters together in a sacred bond of everlasting trust. Certain chaste images spring to mind when one thinks of sororities. But make no mistake: these women are not braiding each other’s hair and having pillow fights—not by a long shot.

What Genevieve Sly Crane has conjured in these pages is a blunt, in your face look behind the closed doors of a house full of contemporary women—and there are no holds barred. These women have issues: self-inflicted, family inflicted, sister-to-sister inflicted—and it is all on the page. At the center of this swirl is Margot: the sister who died in the house, and each chapter is told from the points of view of the women who orbit her death and have their own reactions to it.

With a keen sense of character and elegant, observant prose, Crane details the undercurrents of tension in a world where perfection comes at a cost and the best things in life are painful—if not impossible—to acquire: Beauty. A mother’s love. And friendship… or at least the appearance of it. Woven throughout are glimmers of the classical myths that undercut the lives of women in Greek life. After all, the Greek goddesses did cause their fair share of destruction.

Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.

Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.

Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.

Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.

Most Likely- Sarah Watson

46803605From the creator of the hit TV series The Bold Type comes an empowering and heartfelt novel about a future female president’s senior year of high school.

Ava, CJ, Jordan, and Martha (listed in alphabetical order out of fairness) have been friends since kindergarten. Now they’re in their senior year, facing their biggest fears about growing up and growing apart. But there’s more than just college on the horizon. One of these girls is destined to become the president of the United States. The mystery, of course, is which girl gets the gig.

Is it Ava, the picture-perfect artist who’s secretly struggling to figure out where she belongs? Or could it be CJ, the one who’s got everything figured out…except how to fix her terrible SAT scores? Maybe it’s Jordan, the group’s resident journalist, who knows she’s ready for more than their small Ohio suburb can offer. And don’t overlook Martha, who will have to overcome all the obstacles that stand in the way of her dreams.

This is the story of four best friends who have one another’s backs through every new love, breakup, stumble, and success–proving that great friendships can help young women achieve anything…even a seat in the Oval Office.

Clementine, the catalyst

THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS

The country of Arketta calls them Good Luck Girls–they know their luck is anything but. Sold to a “welcome house” as children and branded with cursed markings. Trapped in a life they would never have chosen.

When Clementine accidentally murders a man, the girls risk a dangerous escape and harrowing journey to find freedom, justice, and revenge in a country that wants them to have none of those things. Pursued by Arketta’s most vicious and powerful forces, both human and inhuman, their only hope lies in a bedtime story passed from one Good Luck Girl to another, a story that only the youngest or most desperate would ever believe.

It’s going to take more than luck for them all to survive.

Praise for THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS

“Don’t underestimate the girls in the Arkettan welcome houses because you might just lose your life. Davis’ The Good Luck Girls is a dust-filled, bloody fairytale set in a menacing world haunted with the reminder―the price of freedom is high, but it’s worth fighting for at all costs. Rise up, teen readers!” ―Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles

“This dystopian debut is deeply connected to today’s social issues, and readers will feel that impact.” ―Booklist

My Review:

“I’m damned if I’ll accept that wickedness is what it takes to survive this life.”

There have been quite a few books released recently that have that Thelma and Louise feel to it. This one was described as that with a mix of Westworld (?) and The Handmaid’s Tale. So I knew that it was going to be enjoyable. What I wasn’t expecting was to be blown away. This book blew my freaking mind and I loved it.

The Good Luck Girls have quite the reputation of starting trouble and not following orders. At young ages, girls are sold to Welcome Houses, so their families could pay off debts owed and live a more comfortable life. Welcome Houses are brothels for men that are traveling through and need a little companionship.

These girls clean and prepare things for the day, until they turn sixteen. Then they are expected to do whatever these Brags (client) say. The happier the Brag, the better your life will be at the Welcome House.

It’s Clementines birthday and this will be her first night working as a Good Luck Girl. Her first Brag is a well-known man and she’s terrified. Things get a little out of hand and she begs him to stop. With him not listening, she grabs the first thing she can get her hands on and hits him a few times until he releases her. But what she soon finds out is that she accidentally killed him. Not knowing what to do, she finds her sister, Aster and they come up with a plan.

Instead of doing the right thing and telling someone, they decide to run. Runaway to a place where all this can be left in the past. Some other girls who are close to Clem and Aster want to escape too. Now it’s five girls on the journey of a lifetime to escape their horrible lives.

But nothing in life is ever that easy and they are on the run. Hiding in dark and creepy places and running into a lot of trouble along the way. They soon find out that they are wanted and the only way to absolve their woes is to see the Lady Ghost. The stories say that she will help them evade the bounty on their heads and save them from punishment.

Is that tale too good to be true? Or will they make it to the light at the end of the tunnel?

This book hooked me just from the synopsis. I wish that I didn’t work all the time because I would have finished this in one day. It was that damn good. This fantasy western will make you look at that genre in a new light and will change your mind for the better.

The Good Luck Girls was one hell of a debut and I need book two instantly. This was a beautiful start to a fantastic series and this author will only grow more amazing as time goes on. This book was powerful and you’ll find yourself addicted to their story. You should add this to your tbr. Yes, it will get you out of your comfort zone but it’ll be totally worth it.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 4/29/19

This week I’m in some kind of nostalgia kick, so most of my reads will be books I remember from when I was younger.

What are you reading this week?

Last Things- Jacqueline West

41154322When strange things start happening to local music idol Anders Thorson, everyone blames his number-one-fan, Thea. But is she out to hurt him? Or protect him?

High school senior Anders Thorson is unusually gifted. His band, Last Things, is legendary in their northern Minnesota hometown. With guitar skills that would amaze even if he weren’t only eighteen, Anders is the focus of head-turning admiration. And Thea Malcom, a newcomer to the insular town, is one of his admirers. Thea seems to turn up everywhere Anders goes: gigs at the local coffeehouse, guitar lessons, even in the woods near Anders’s home. When strange things start happening to Anders—including the disappearance of his beloved cat, then his sort-of girlfriend, and, somehow, his musical talent—blame immediately falls on Thea. But is she trying to hurt him? Or save him? Can he trust a girl who doesn’t seem to know the difference between dreams and reality? And how much are they both willing to compromise to get what they want?
