~The Page 69 Test~ Broken Things- Lauren Oliver

The Page 69 TestHappy Thursday! Today I’m going to give you a sneak peak on an upcoming novel coming out in October. I hope you enjoy!

My co-bloggers and I have started a new weekly blog post: The Page 69 Test! Have you heard of the page 69 test? If not, it’s basically where you read page 69 of a book you think you will like. If you liked reading page 69, chances are you will enjoy reading the rest of the book.

Instead of posting the full page, we will be posting the first 10-20 lines of that page,                                                                                            starting with the first full sentence.

This week I went with a book that I’m currently reading. It’s definitely an odd one and a great read for the spooky month of October. We all know and love Lauren Oliver but this is something completely different than what she is used to writing. I really hope you guys enjoy!

“I don’t stop until I’ve rounded the corner and turned onto Waldmann Lane, where I’m concealed by the thick growth on either side of the road. I drop my duffel, cursing, rolling the pain out of my shoudler. There’s a chalky taste in my mouth. Goddamn Marcy. Goddamn prepubescent fireman, Goddamn Twin lakes.

I remember one time toward the end of the school year in sixth grade, when it was too hot to go to Lovelorn, too hot to do anything but lie across my bed reading magazines and taking quizzes online with the AC on full blast, Summer said her biggest fear was of being forgotten. That’s why she was going to be a model and then write and star in her own TV show. If you weren’t famous, Summer argued, if no one remembered you, you might as well not have lived at all. I understood her point, even though I’d never wanted to be famous.

But Sumer hadn’t thought it all out. She didn’t realize how much depends on what you’re remembered for. Sometimes, it’s so much better to be forgotten.”

img_4960      It’s been five years since Summer Marks was brutally murdered in the woods.

Everyone thinks Mia and Brynn killed their best friend. That driven by their obsession with a novel called The Way into Lovelorn the three girls had imagined themselves into the magical world where their fantasies became twisted, even deadly.

The only thing is: they didn’t do it.

On the anniversary of Summer’s death, a seemingly insignificant discovery resurrects the mystery and pulls Mia and Brynn back together once again. But as the lines begin to blur between past and present and fiction and reality, the girls must confront what really happened in the woods                                                                    all those years ago—no matter how monstrous.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

Happy Monday!

It’s going to be a very long week and I’m ready for it to be over.

Haven’t done a Monday post in awhile and thought it was time for one.

This week I plan on Reading:

Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend- Alan Cumyn

People have been telling me that I need to read this because they are dying to read my review. Well, it’s coming soon…..

Broken Things- Lauren Oliver

I’ve had this arc since May and I can’t believe it took me this long to attempt to read it.

Communion- Frank Lauria

And finally, I wanted to read something creepy and I think this fits the month. Alice Sweet Alice was such a crazy movie that I’m hoping this will be even better.

What do you plan on reading this week?

Replica- Lauren Oliver

“Besides, normal is overrated. Normal is a word invented by boring people to make them feel better about being boring.”

Some many times I have been burned by jumping on the Oliver fan train. Been thrown off and left bloody by the yawnfest that was her teen novels. But this! This will open your eyes and change your mind on reading her books and trusting people.

I was expecting some paranoia and a twist. What you’re left with is horror, shock and a punch to the gut swung back from left field. Leaves you with a loss for words.

There are a few ways to actually read this book. I chose to alternate between the two different point of views from chapter to chapter. I felt this way gave you a better feel and understanding at what was happening between the two at the exact same time. Not sure I would have enjoyed this as much if I read one side to finish and then the other. Start with Lyra and switch to Gemma for a fantastic journey to the unknown with alittle perv thrown in for good measure.

Lyra is a patient at Haven, a secretive facility located in the swampland of Florida. None of them can read, write or even allowed to leave the facility. All of them were given numbers as names until a doctor gave them names after the constellations in the sky. Lyra has questions and no one is willing to hand them over so easily. Everyday they are tested and some of the patients have been slowly dying. They are treated like animals and it’s time to revolt. Lyra makes a run for it.

Gemma is known as Germ to the people at school. They have teased her for as long as she can remember. Ever since she was a little girl she has had horrendous medical problems and it restricts her from doing physical activities. Her best friend April is the only one who lifts her spirits. For spring break, her and April make plans to go to Florida and enjoy the sun.

Gemmas dad is part of some great conspiracy and once news passes to her dad, he forbids her from going on the trip. Desperate times come to desperate measures and she finds herself traveling to Florida with a guy who everyone calls Perv, but something sweet is in the air.

Lyra runs away from Haven and stumbles upon another runaway named 72. While talking to each other, something catastrophic happens and they are now on the run.

There is so much that happens in this book that it’s hard to wrap it all up. This leaves you with just a taste. Hopefully enough for you to pick it up.

I am actually very excited for book two. A lot happened in book one and we need answers. It leaves you on the edge of a cliff and how is this going to wrap up? Gemma and Lyra together are a powerhouse set of characters. They are very well developed and you easily connect with them.

The deaths, the horror and the just plain strange is phenomenal. A tale that won’t soon be forgotten.

Replica by Lauren Oliver

To say this is my second book Iv read from Oliver. Her other series Iv read from her was the delirium series which I loved minus it’s ending.  But to start out this book is very interesting since its 2 stories in one with some events going on same time since both pov of characters are together but thought process is diffrent. But ways could read it were lyra’s story then Gemma’s  who are the main characters and that’s how I read this book. 2nd way is Gemma’s then lyra’s, or last but not least keep switching chapters lyra’s then gems or vice versa.  But story starts off for way I read it lyra’s whole life is just routine since she in this place where always going for tests see if can do things right and so on. Most people who are nurses treat her like crud like she is a lab rat. Minus a few. Just one day she is out and place explodes and she found a opening to escape she is undecided if should go since she is afraid but does anyways and finds Gemma. Gemma’s story is her family treats her like she is a little baby always, plus since get go always has been sick. & her dad is never home given he is a politician and owns 6th biggest pharmaceutical company  and mom high on prescription meds. One day altercation breaks out between her dad and mom and hears some info that surprises herself and is out to go seek the information she heard so her destination is this place called the heaven.

Lyra’s story: personally I didn’t find this to much fun to read since mostly since everything to her seems dull mostly because of her start. But even as slowly learn what she is by Teaching herself to other things just all basic stuff and don’t go into how character devolves which isn’t much but also because doesn’t know much I know not her fault but it bored me. 3.0/5 stars

Gemma’s: now this part of story I loved at the start she is so scared to remotely do anything plus wanting freedoms since her family always treating her like a little kid so finally she has enough and sayes going to Florida with her best friend. While waiting for this trip you hear of the heaven explosion. Hears something things about her the place and decides go fishing for information, thru the book you see her become this shy little thing to a person wouldn’t want mess with so i liked that aspect and details she finds. Plus Gemma’s whole side is action packed and reason this book is a 4 star instead of 3. But Gemma’s side 5/5 stars

Overall rating: 4/5 star ~~~~~ JUSTIN
