It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 10/28/19

This week I’m going to read two books that I’ve been wanting to read for quite some time.

What are you reading this week?

After- Anna Todd

22557520. sy475 Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.

But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.

But he’s also rude—to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.

He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless…could this be love?

Now newly revised and expanded, Anna Todd’s After fanfiction racked up 1 billion reads online and captivated readers across the globe. Experience the Internet’s most talked-about book for yourself!

There was the time before Tessa met Hardin, and then there’s everything AFTER … Life will never be the same.

The Institute- Stephen King

48284797. sy475 From #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King, the most riveting and unforgettable story of kids confronting evil since It—publishing just as the second part of It, the movie, lands in theaters.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. “You check in, but you don’t check out.”

In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.

As psychically terrifying as Firestarter, and with the spectacular kid power of It, The Institute is Stephen King’s gut-wrenchingly dramatic story of good vs. evil in a world where the good guys don’t always win.

*Review* The Vine Witch- Luanne G. Smith

43236277A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

My Review:

“You’ll burn in Hell for this. The witch scoffed. What makes you think I haven’t already?”

The Vine Witch is a spellbinding must-read for the Halloween season. It combines a lot of things I love. It has Witches, Wine, Murder, and a little bit of love to throw you off and I really enjoyed it.

Elena was cursed after she turned down a proposal. The joining of two people is supposed to be the highlight of a persons life but she didn’t feel that way. After turning it down, Elena is cursed for seven years. That is until she breaks it and returns to the only place she knows, Château Renard.

She’s excited to get back to the vineyard, help everything grow and to see her family again. But things have changed. It was sold to John-Paul Martel who doesn’t believe in superstitions. She talks him into letting her stay and she must perform her witchery when he’s not around.

The fields are glowing with a hex that Elena tries to rid of. But there’s something down deeper that Elena can’t let go of. She wants revenge. Revenge on the person who stole seven years of her life. As she tries to break apart the hex, she won’t rest until this person/s are brought to justice.

The Vine Witch was a great story. I was so enraptured by this story that I didn’t want to put it down. I really dislike it when life gets in the way of a good book.

This was a really fun story with amazing and strong characters. It was great to see different witches throughout and to read what all they could do.

This is great for people who love a great mystery with witches, wine, and a good romance.

This debut was fantastic and I can’t wait to read more by her.

*First Line Friday 10/4/19* Regretting You- Colleen Hoover

46117419From #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Ends with Us comes a poignant novel about family, first love, grief, and betrayal that will touch the hearts of both mothers and daughters.

Morgan Grant and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Clara, would like nothing more than to be nothing alike.

Morgan is determined to prevent her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. By getting pregnant and married way too young, Morgan put her own dreams on hold. Clara doesn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her predictable mother doesn’t have a spontaneous bone in her body.

With warring personalities and conflicting goals, Morgan and Clara find it increasingly difficult to coexist. The only person who can bring peace to the household is Chris—Morgan’s husband, Clara’s father, and the family anchor. But that peace is shattered when Chris is involved in a tragic and questionable accident. The heartbreaking and long-lasting consequences will reach far beyond just Morgan and Clara.

While struggling to rebuild everything that crashed around them, Morgan finds comfort in the last person she expects to, and Clara turns to the one boy she’s been forbidden to see. With each passing day, new secrets, resentment, and misunderstandings make mother and daughter fall further apart. So far apart, it might be impossible for them to ever fall back together.

35820721. sy475 The world has changed.

Scientists warned it would happen.

Meteors devastated the Earth. World Governments developed plans to help surviving citizens. The United States disbanded and salvageable land was divided into four quadrants—North, South, East, and West—governed by The Remnant Council.

Struggling to survive, seventeen-year-old Ava ends up in juvenile detention, until she is selected for a new life—with a catch. She must be injected with an experimental serum. The results will be life-changing. The serum will make her better. To receive the serum Ava agrees to join a program controlled by ISAN, the International Sensory Assassin Network.

While on a mission, she is abducted by a rebel group led by Rhett and told that not only does she have a history with him, but her entire past is a lie perpetuated by ISAN to ensure her compliance. Unsure of who to trust, Ava must decide if her strangely familiar and handsome captor is her enemy or her savior—and time is running out.

44149934Alliances are forming. The resistance is growing. Everything is about to change.

With her memory still fragmented, Ava returns to the International Sensory Assassin Network (ISAN) to find the twin sister she never knew she had.

But as Ava hunts for information, she finds herself tangled in a web of yet more lies and conspiracy. The Helix serum may not be required to access her superpowers, and the number of male assassins—previously considered too volatile to tolerate Helix—is growing in every territory.

The more Ava uncovers, the more of a threat she becomes to ISAN. Her only salvation may be to join the rebels—if she isn’t killed first.

My Review:

“You know how you girls have loads of book boyfriends? Well, I have my book girlfriends.
I snorted.
Laugh all you want but a real man likes to read.”

I’ve had this arc sitting on my bookshelf for years and I’ve thought about reading it a few times but decided against it. There is seriously something wrong with me because this was epic as hell. I was captivated from page one and now I’m desperate for book two. This was my very first experience with paranormal romance from Micalea and it certainly won’t be my last.

Mara’s adult life is just beginning. She’s graduating and turning eighteen soon. Life hasn’t always been perfect but life never is. She’s lost her Mom at a very young age and it’s just been her and her Dad. But things are about to change.

The night of graduation, Mara attends a party with her very best friend. Things go from fun to devastating as her friend appears covered in blood and is freaking out. As they rush home, Mara finds a stranger in her house demanding that they leave now and that there’s no time to explain.

She notices this strange man from dreams and from catching glimpses of him around. She relents and off they go. He tells her things that she didn’t know existed but she knows for sure that she’s in danger and he’s there to protect her at all costs.

Mara learns that she’s an enchanter and Theodore is her protector. The Iniquitious is after her and they want blood. Theo is taking her to a safe house to protect her and so she can learn to use her abilities to the full extent. But sometimes secrets are closer to home than you think.

Enchant was magical, captivating, and exhilarating. It was a thrill ride that wouldn’t let you go. I honestly couldn’t stop reading this, I was/am addicted to Mara’s story. Mara and Theo are two characters that you won’t ever forget and you’ll be desperate to read more about them. And don’t even get me started on how swoony Theo is.

I’m just speechless at how breathtaking this is. Don’t hesitate to pick this up as I did. Make sure you have the second book available after reading this because you’ll be losing your mind from that ending.

My Review:

Olivia is living her best life and thinks that she has it all figured out. In her eyes, this is absolute perfection. It’s almost Summer and she is with the love of her life and best friend, Zander. Until her estranged Mother enters her life again and her boyfriend Zander breaks her heart. She now believes that fate isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes fate can be a cruel mistress.

Aiden is an all-star pitcher on the High School baseball team. But he abruptly quits the team after being beaned with a baseball. He can’t tell his team that he is losing his vision. So, he ignores his team and tries to enjoy his stress-free summer.

Olivia needs something to occupy her time, so she doesn’t wallow away in misery. She decides to get a job for the summer. She gets a job at the River Depot and works side-by-side with Aiden. They decide to spend their Summer together and live their best lives by chance. A flip of a coin is all it takes for them to move onto being more than just friends.

Is this just a summer fling? Or can summer love weather the storm?

When Summer Ends was really adorable. You’ll fall in love with this mesmerizing journey of love and self-discovery. Let’s not forget that Aiden is relationship goals! This is the perfect summer read and it will make you want to live your best life possible. I highly recommend this.
