It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 8/12/19

This week I’m reading a book a friend just sent me and two arcs that I’ve had for over two years.

What are you reading this week?

An Enchantment of Ravens- Margaret Rogerson

30969741. sy475 A skilled painter must stand up to the ancient power of the faerie courts—even as she falls in love with a faerie prince—in this gorgeous debut novel.

Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel’s paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes—a weakness that could cost him his life.

Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild Hunt’s ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then love—and that love violates the fair folks’ ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.

Not Even Bones- Rebecca Schaeffer

37570585Dexter meets This Savage Song in this dark fantasy about a girl who sells magical body parts on the black market — until she’s betrayed.

Nita doesn’t murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet—her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they’ve been “acquired.” Until her mom brings home a live specimen and Nita decides she wants out; dissecting a scared teenage boy is a step too far. But when she decides to save her mother’s victim, she ends up sold in his place—because Nita herself isn’t exactly “human.” She has the ability to alter her biology, a talent that is priceless on the black market. Now on the other side of the bars, if she wants to escape, Nita must ask herself if she’s willing to become the worst kind of monster.

When Dimple Met Rishi- Sandhya Menon

28458598Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

The Lost and the Scarred- T. Marie Alexander

47147360. sy475 ROX
When I was six, Wran Belmont found me buried in snow and gave me a place to live.

He became my best friend.

When I was fifteen, I gave him all of me—only for him to abandon me.

Now, he’s back and expecting the lost, scarred girl he’s left behind. I’m not that girl anymore. And while I may still have secrets, it will not be as easy for him to retrieve them this time around.

WRAN
When I was eleven, my father lost his job and became a pathetic excuse for a father. A few months later I found Roxanna Raine buried in snow, barely hanging on to life.

Her father was the reason mine was an alcoholic, and I thought about letting her freeze to death.

One look in her eyes and she became my kryptonite. I swore I would get my revenge, though, even if it was on the fair-skinned beauty.

When I was nineteen, I left Rox without an explanation—broken-hearted and even more lost.

Now, I’m back and I’ll do anything to make up for the stolen time.

Beat the Backlist 2018 Challenge

Beat the Backlist

Hi, fellow book lovers! I’m coming to you today to talk about the first ever book challenge I will be participating in. It’s a year long challenge and as procrastination is a close friend, I’ll be working on creating a schedule so I do not end up having to read more books in the last month of the year. The challenge is Beat the Backlist and is hosted by NovelKnight! I absolutely love NovelKnight’s blog, so I am super excited to take part in this challenge.

The Rules of Beat the Backlist:

The challenge will run from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. You have an ENTIRE YEAR to complete your goal!

Books must be released prior to 2018 to count for this challenge. Although we love new releases, too, this isn’t the challenge for them.

Luckily for me, I have over five hundred books that I’ve bought in the past few years that are dying to be read. Yep, over five hundred. And I only chose a certain amount. Since I am one of those people that has a hard time reading fifty books a year, I decided to go with a number that I think should be easy to reach in twelve months.

My Goal for Beat the Backlist: Read 24 books in 2018.

That’s two books a month. Easily accomplishable, right? I hope so, considering I have my reviews of 2018 arcs scheduled all the way through May. We shall see.

Since I had over five hundred books, I decided to do a random number generator to choose my twenty-four books. Some are books I started but never finished, some are books I haven’t read yet, and some are books I will be re-reading.

The 24 Books are (in no particular order):

  1. The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell
  2. Timeless by Alexandra Monir
  3. Untold by Sarah Rees Brennan
  4. How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather
  5. The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles
  6. Empress of a Thousand Skies by Rhoda Belleza
  7. A Sky Full of Stars by Samantha Chase
  8. Endure by Sara B. Larson
  9. The Ship Beyond Time by Heidi Heilig
  10. The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron
  11. The Affiliate by K.A. Linde
  12. A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
  13. Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray
  14. The White Road of the Moon by Rachel Neumeier
  15. The Best Kind of Magic by Crystal Cestari
  16. The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead
  17. Hidden by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast
  18. King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard
  19. Wires and Nerves by Marissa Meyer
  20. An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
  21. Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter
  22. Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
  23. Ruined by Amy Tintera
  24. Timebound by Rysa Walker

I can’t wait to start this challenge tomorrow!
