Title: The Bone Thief (The Bone Charmer #2)

Author: Breeana Shields

Publisher: Page Street Kids

Release Date: May 26th 2020

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Synopsis:

“I was absolutely swept away by the world of The Bone Charmer.” – Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series

A deft exploration of the weight of grief and cost of revenge, Breeana Shields’s Bone Charmer duology reaches its spine-tingling conclusion in this high-octane fantasy-thriller.

Saskia returns to Ivory Hall to train in bone magic, determined to stop Latham from gaining the power of all three Sights—past, present, and future. But danger lurks within the fortress’s marrow. Trials are underway for the apprentices, and the tasks feel specifically engineered to torment Saskia, which is exactly what Latham wants.

As she grows increasingly more suspicious, her thirst for revenge becomes all-consuming. Together with the friends she can trust and the boy she loved in another lifetime, Saskia traces clues from Latham’s past to determine what he’ll do next. Their search leads them across Kastelia and brings them to a workshop housing a vast collection of horrors, including the bones Latham stole from Gran, and the knowledge that the future isn’t all that’s in jeopardy—but the past as well.

My Review

This is a review of book two in The Bone Charmer duology. To read my review of the first book, click here

“I feel like a tree branch caught in the current—bobbing along on the swells of fate, powerless to change direction. Buy maybe it doesn’t have to be that way I need to take control. It’s time to become the river.”

At the end of The Bone Charmer, we saw Saskia’s two futures become one. Now, she returns to Ivory Hall to participate in The Bone Games, which is made to help test Saskia (but it turns out to seem like her own personal torture). She teams up with her friends and Bram, the boy she loves, to pass The Bone Games and defeat Lathan once and for all. But Saskia learns that it’s not just her future and her friends that are at stake – it’s also the past. As Latham works to gain the ability of all three Sights, Saskia works to stop him while also struggling with her grief and some of her past choices.

The Bone Thief is a brilliant sequel to The Bone Charmer, one filled with intense emotions and the struggle between what is right and what needs to be done. The characters really helped to enhance these emotions swirling throughout the book – some of the side characters even helped Saskia control said emotions. But the relationships Saskia builds with these characters were beautiful and just what she needed in this time of her life.

“I’ve tried to stem the tides of hatred that spills over my heart like poison…But in quiet moments—when I have too much time to think—my hart still feels dark with hate.”

Shields did an amazing job of portraying Saskia’s revenge. She wants revenge against Latham for everything he has done to her and her family, and she lets that revenge (and her grief) overpower everything else. She’s devastated at the past and present choices she has had to make. I could feel the emotions Saskia was fighting – her romantic feelings for Bram, her appetite for revenge, and her grief for losing her mother. Her emotions are so powerful and raw in this story, and it’s really what made her character growth so exceptional in this story.

The struggles Saskia faces with the second path she was on in the first book are still relevant in this book. Even though that path no longer exists, the feelings she experienced do, such as her love for Bram, who is a different Bram in her current path. It was interesting to see Saskia’s path grow from the first book and watch her make certain decisions that could potentially alter her past and future. She was, ultimately, a brilliant well-developed character.

“And so I focus on my anger instead. I let it fester and ooze. My father once said that anger was like paint on a wall—it might be the first thing you noticed, but it’s always just covering up something else. You can’t actually building anything from it.

But I think he’s wrong.

I think if the anger is big enough, maybe it could build a whole world. A different future.”

One of my favorite parts of this duology was the bone magic system. Saskia explores her bone magic further in The Bone Thief during The Bone Games and on her journey to take revenge. I love how Shields further explored the three Sights. She weaved this enchanting magic system into a beautiful and captivating world.

And the world building. I thought the world building in The Bone Charmer was phenomenal, but Shields developed the world further in The Bone Thief in such a brilliant way. The world is so well depicted and beautifully described. Shields brought this dazzling unique world to life; I felt like I was walking the halls with Saskia in Ivory Hall or assisting her on her many dangerous adventures. It was, overall, an enchanting world.

The Bone Thief had one of my favorite endings to a duology. It’s smart and equally fitting, and wonderfully ties up the duology. It’s a story about revenge, grief, love, and finding your true path in life. It’s a well-developed fantasy duology that I believe many fantasy readers will love.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 5/11/20

Hello and happy Monday.

These days seem to be zooming past so quickly.

This week I’m going to read a book that I’ve won on Twitter, an arc that I’ve picked up at ALA Midwinter, and a book that I’ve owned for quite some time.

What are you reading?

The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly- Jamie Pacton

49952514. sx318 sy475 Working as a wench ― i.e. waitress ― at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.

Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first.

Moxie meets A Knight’s Tale as Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.

Cinderella is Dead- Kalynn Bayron

51079282. sx318 sy475 “Wholly original and captivating.” – Brigid Kemmerer, New York Times bestselling author of A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Girls team up to overthrow the kingdom in this unique and powerful retelling of Cinderella from a stunning new voice that’s perfect for fans of A Curse So Dark and Lonely.

It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.

Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all–and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew . . .

This fresh take on a classic story will make readers question the tales they’ve been told, and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them.

Sorority- Genevieve Sly Crane

36374015. sy475 Sisterhood is forever…whether you like it or not.

Prep meets Girls in White Dresses in Genevieve Sly Crane’s deliciously addictive, voyeuristic exploration of female friendship and coming of age that will appeal to anyone who has ever been curious about what happens in a sorority house.

Twinsets and pearls, secrets and kinship, rituals that hold sisters together in a sacred bond of everlasting trust. Certain chaste images spring to mind when one thinks of sororities. But make no mistake: these women are not braiding each other’s hair and having pillow fights—not by a long shot.

What Genevieve Sly Crane has conjured in these pages is a blunt, in your face look behind the closed doors of a house full of contemporary women—and there are no holds barred. These women have issues: self-inflicted, family inflicted, sister-to-sister inflicted—and it is all on the page. At the center of this swirl is Margot: the sister who died in the house, and each chapter is told from the points of view of the women who orbit her death and have their own reactions to it.

With a keen sense of character and elegant, observant prose, Crane details the undercurrents of tension in a world where perfection comes at a cost and the best things in life are painful—if not impossible—to acquire: Beauty. A mother’s love. And friendship… or at least the appearance of it. Woven throughout are glimmers of the classical myths that undercut the lives of women in Greek life. After all, the Greek goddesses did cause their fair share of destruction.

My Review

“Darkness waits like a devil outside my window – curling its shadowy fingertips beneath the shutters, drawing its inky claws across the latch, raising every hair on my body as temptation trickles down my spine.”

Night Spinner is one of those tales that’s hard to forget after reading. I have yet to read a retelling of Hunchback of Notre Dame, and I was blown away by this powerful retelling. If Night Spinner is not on your radar, I’d definitely make sure it’s added; it’s a story many readers will love!

I am not what they make of me, but what I make of me.

Enebish, in this story, is Quasimodo from the classic. She’s an ex-warrior, someone that many people identify as a monster and murderer with rare and dangerous magic. Yet she’s stricken with guilt, which is a leading factor as to why she accepts her adoptive sister’s offer to capture a criminal. But Enebish soon starts to realize that not everything goes as planned and not everyone can be trusted.

“The time for timidness has long since passed. We must all take risks. Make sacrifices.”

Enebish is an exceptionally well-written character. She’s strong but fights her past demons every day, struggling with finding ways to move on. But she’s not a quitter, she’s a fighter and she refuses to give up. Her characterization makes for a fast-paced story with incredible action. And the many characters she meets on her travels (and the characters from her past) help shape and define who she is and she becomes. Each character plays a different role in Enebish’s story, and each character, in their way, is captivating.

You miss many things when your world is so small.

The world building is absolutely breathtaking, with visionary descriptions and lush prose. I felt immediately part of the world and landscape, and immediately part of this exciting story. Thorley’s writing is what truly brought this story to life for me; her writing is exceptional. She knows how to weave together a remarkable story with unforgettable characters.

Night Spinner easily became one of those stories that captured my attention from the beginning. It’s a fierce retelling that is sure to enamor any reader who picks it up. I believe this is a tale I’ll always recommend, as it’s definitely found a place in my bookish heart.

My Review

Woven in Moonlight is one of the books I could easily fall in love with: enjoyable characters with strong development, incredible world building, and lush prose. It had all the elements I love in a fantasy novel. This book is truly a strong and masterful debut in the Young Adult fantasy genre.

“Words empowered by justice can never be silenced.”

Ximena is the decoy for the Queen, someone she easily sees as her sister. She understands how important her role is and what it means to protect the condesa from those that would wish to harm her. And when a Llacsan king demands the condesa’s hand in marriage, Ximena goes in her place, doing what she can to protect the condesa. But Ximena has plans of her own: plans that involve breaking this forced marriage and finding a path of her own, one that might possibly separate her from the condesa’s standin. Her courage and love for her people is inspiring, and it makes it difficult for any ready to not like her as a character. Yes, she has flaws (what character doesn’t?), but those flaws never overpower her true mission or her heart.

The world building in Woven in Moonlight is by far phenomenal and beautiful; the lush descriptions really make it easy to picture the world and the hardships many people face, including Ximena. This story is filled to the brim with storytelling and that dash of magic, I thought, really brought this story together nicely. I was, overall, very impressed with the layout and pace of this story – it’s not too slow, not too fast, and it builds tension (and a slow burn romance, might I add) really well, well enough to keep the reader on the edge of their seat.

“Rising tides can’t be held back, but they can be ridden.”

Ibañez has a way with her words. Her writing is powerful and lavish; she could turn even a truly dark scene into a scene that captures the beauty of the light. Her writing brought this world to life and gave the characters a strong and heartfelt voice, especially Ximena. It’s what made the story authentic and feel so real. Ibañez did an amazing job giving this novel (and the characters) a voice.

Woven in Moonlight is inspired by Bolivian culture and history and the current political situation; with all that said, this book beautifully captures that culture and historical background. I was really moved by this book and became deeply attached to some of the characters. I’m looking forward to reading Ibañez’s next work, as she has easily become an instant-buy author for me.

My review

“Self-control today is a gift for tomorrow. Be kind to your future self.”

Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon is fast paced and adventurous with enriching cultural context and beautiful world building. It’s a book I devoured in mere days and one I would happily gift to a friend. This action packed story kept me on my toes and grabbed my attention from page one. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the wonderful cultural aspect that brought the story to life. The writing is absolutely beautiful and creates a richly-developed world with interesting characters and far-off adventures.

“My new title might be Lady, but even after they scrub me clean, paint my face, and clothe me in silk, I’ll still be little more than a slave.”

Anlei is a strong and fierce protagonist who thrives on adventure. She’s determined to avenger her father’s death against the dangerous Ligui that killed him, all while trying to determine what her future is going to look like. And her image of her future disappears when the viceroy chooses her as his next bride. Her whole world, her whole reason for wanting revenge, takes a sharp and surprising turn with the viceroy’s announcement. And though she wants to say no to being the viceroy’s wife, she obliges to save her village and get the viceroy’s army to protect her people. That, right there in my opinion, is a characteristic that makes for a brave protagonist.

Even though Anlei cares about her future and her life, she’s willing to sacrifice it all to make sure her people are protected from the Ligui. And even when the River Pearl (the whole reason the viceroy went to Anlei’s village) gets stolen by a masked thief, Anlei puts it in her hands to follow the thief and get the River Pearl back, all to make sure her village is safe. This journey leads to a further understanding of who Anlei really is and who she is destined to be.

“For so long, my life was dictated by forces beyond my control. Even when I sought justice for my father, I was controlled by a rage tied to another. But that’s over now. From now on, only I define my destiny.”

The relationship between Anlei and Tai starts out rough but playful and as they learn to trust one another, their relationship turns into something more. The journey the two take together is dangerous and long, but provides ample time for both of them to understand one another. Anlei and Tai both want to save their village with the River Pearl and, in doing so, have to learn how to work and trust one another.

Mary Fan did a wonderful job with this book and I look forward to reading her other work. Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon is available in stores now!

My Review

“Gran said once that in families with long lines of bone magic – families like ours – power is like a fire that burns hotter with each new generation. She meant it to be encouraging, and she had pride in her eyes when she said it, but by then I already knew the truth – the stronger the blaze, the harder it is to control. And the faster it destroys.”

The Bone Charmer tells the tale of Saskia and her journeys after her kenning. Her Bone Charmer mother has the power to see multiple future paths for Saskia, but Saskia believes her mother only picks the path she will despise the most: the path of a Bone Charmer and with the guy she does not love. But all actions have consequences and Saskia’s future gets split into two paths after her bone fractures. And in each path, she faces unforeseen dangers that will not only harm her, but the people she holds close. Saskia must determine which path is meant to survive and be her future before its too late.

Saskia is a fun and wholly original character that doesn’t want her future to be defined by a kenning. She knows what she wants to do and, yet, it’s tradition to have a kenning. I would have liked to have seen a bit more character development on Saskia, but I have a feeling the sequel will unveil even more of Saskia’s character and her future.

Breeana Shields knows how to weave a world. The world in The Bone Charmer is fascinating and beautifully depicted. Both of Saskia’s paths are well-written and uniquely created. At first, it was a bit confusing trying to determine which path I was reading but once I figured that out, the story started to pick up and really developed into a fun adventurous story. And I enjoyed the aspect of Saskia’s future being broken into two paths. It made me think of what would happen if my future broke into two paths: what path would I want to be my future?

“The past is a rigid and unchangeable thing.”

I also really enjoyed the idea of bone magic and blood. I found the idea to be fascinating and seeing Saskia explore bone magic in one of her paths was really interesting. A Bone Charmer has the capability to use magic to either see the past, present, or future, but they cannot see all three. Saskia can see the present but not the past or future, which is a really neat concept. All three are wonderfully explored in The Bone Charmer, and I thought it was unique to see just how different bone magic is used for each reading.

Anyone who knows me (and my love for the fantasy genre) knows how much I enjoy a good plot twist. And, boy, does The Bone Charmer have plot twists. The Bone Charmer kept me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. I wanted to know the potential outcome of each of Saskia’s paths and what that did for her character development.

Overall, The Bone Charmer is captivating and weaves together magic and the possibilities of one’s future. I look forward to seeing how Saskia’s story continues in the sequel!

The Bone Charmer comes out May 21, 2019.
