*Review* Verity- Colleen Hoover

43225180Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity’s notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn’t expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity’s recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen’s feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife’s words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

A standalone romantic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, releasing December 18th.

My Review:

“What you read will taste so bad at times, you’ll want to spit it out, but you’ll swallow these words and they will become part of you, part of your gut, and you will hurt because of them.”

Colleen Hoover steps out of her comfort zone and brings a riveting thriller to the table. An unexpected tale that you won’t be able to put down. This is the best possible way to lose sleep.

Lowen is dealing with the aftermath of losing her Mother and is struggling to gain her ground as a writer. She gets the call of a lifetime to finish a mystery series for a very famous author who is no longer able to write due to an injury she suffered after her being involved in a car accident. She’s hesitant at first but the money that is offered it too hard to pass up. That money will save her from complete ruin.

She picks up her life and moves into the Crawford residence. Lowen has years and years of notes and scrap pieces of papers to go through to help her complete this series. Thinking maybe she can find an outline or any information that will help her in any way. What she stumbles upon is something that will make her start to question everything. It’s a manuscript for an autobiography by Verity Crawford.

Lowen decides to keep it a secret to save Jeremy (Verity’s Husband) from dealing with more grief. He already lost his twin girls in two separate accidents and now is helping take care of his wife who is confined to a bed or a wheelchair. But as Lowen reads on and starts falling in love with Jeremy, she contemplates showing him this morbid manuscript.

Will Jeremy learn the truth about his wife? Or will Lowen complete the series while biting her tongue?

This book was full of crazy twists and turns that I didn’t know where to look next. There are not enough words in this language to warn you about how morbid and disturbing this book was but I loved every single page. CoHo leaves her comfy space to bring you something dark and twisted. I never knew that she could write something like this and I hope she continues with this genre. She was made for the dark and disturbing.

Verity is a novel that will shock you and turn your blood cold. Everything in this book will make you rethink everything and to trust no one. This was so intense that I couldn’t put it down. Just be ready to be mind-blown and to have your mind scattered in a million different pieces. This will definitely be the page-turner of the year.

*Review* Without Merit- Colleen Hoover

33280872     Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

My Review:

“Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.”

Well, it looks like I’m in the minority with this book because I really enjoyed this one. A lot of people have warned me away from this but I thought this was really good. It was a lot different than what I was expecting but it still packed that emotional punch.

Merit and her family are anything but normal. They are quirky, broken, and have plenty of problems but they aren’t that supportive. Merit feels left out and she’s been slowly giving up on things in her life. Except for other people’s trophies.

While skipping school one day, Merit finds an incredibly attractive guy watching her every move with a smile that could melt anyone. After she makes her purchase, makes her way outside, she runs into this guy and they have the most incredible kiss. Not knowing who he is, she falls into it. Until she realizes that he thinks she’s someone else, that someone else being her twin sister, Honor.

Keeping this big of a secret should be no problem for her. Her entire life has been nothing but keeping other secrets for her family and away from each other. She also feels invisible. That is until Sagan starts popping up over at their house early in the morning and at dinner. She can’t get away from him but he notices her.

With so many family problems making their way out into the open, Merit finds herself sliding into a deeper hole that she can’t get herself out of. Will someone notice this fast downslide? Or will it consume her?

Without Merit was a book that I knew I was going to love. Dysfunctional families are kind of my thing and I can’t get enough. It makes me realize that my family isn’t the only crazy ones in the world. But this sweet, heart-wrenching story made me weep deeply at the downslide and the love. Let’s not forget all that dry humor that just made me cry even harder. Sagan and Merit’s story was something that touched me deeply and it’s something that I’ll never forget. This memorable story is something everyone should read. It will make the darkest soul shine brightly.

My Review

“***** screamed, turned, and ducked as the knife in the killer’s hand lunged for her throat. The blade flashed an electric blue as lightning colored the sky.”

Horror mysteries should always leave you guessing up until the very end. But even though I knew who this mysterious murderer was, the reasoning behind it will shock you.

*queue the spooky slasher music*

Trask Academy is the performing arts school that everyone wants to attend if they want to make it anywhere. It has a reputation of putting talented kids into the roles of a lifetime. But it also comes with a deep dark reputation.

Eighteen years ago, a blazing fire destroyed the performance stage. It took the life of a young thespian and the center is now under construction.

With new students coming to the Academy, stories become legendary and history starts to repeat itself. Seniors start dropping like flies and everyone is a suspect.

Will the identity of the mystery slasher be revealed before all lives are lost? Or will the show go on?

An end to any story can make or break the entire book, especially with slasher books. But this one did not disappoint. The characters were interesting in their own special kind of way and the way they talked reminded of certain slasher films that we all love. It was like reliving things from the past and it was awesome.

Jinxed was a spooky read throughout and it will leave you wide-eyed and gasping as you figure out what the hell is going on.

*Arc Review* That’s Not What I Heard- Stephanie Kate Strohm

39983680    What did you hear?

Kimberly Landis-Lilley and Teddy Lin are over. Yes, the Kim and Teddy broke up.

At least that’s what Phil Spooner thinks he overheard and then told Jess Howard, Kim’s best friend. Something about Teddy not liking Kim’s Instas? Or was it that Teddy is moving to Italy and didn’t want to do long distance? Or that Kim slid into someone else’s DMs?

Jess told her boyfriend, Elvis, that he needs to be on Kim’s side. Especially if he wants to keep her as his girlfriend. But Elvis is also Teddy’s best friend.

Now, Kim’s run out of school for the day. Jess is furious. Elvis is confused. And half the lunch period won’t talk to Teddy. Even the teachers have taken sides.

William Henry Harrison High will never be the same again!

My Review:

“But maybe that was part of saying goodbye- you were never really ready.”

William Henry Harrison High is in total disarray. The “IT” couple has split up and everyone is losing their minds. But how did it happen? And why? I’ve heard that it was…. and she heard it was because….. As rumors start to fly and people start taking sides, will the school will never get back on track?

This book is the high school version of the telephone game. Someone tells a secret and it spreads to someone else with something else added to it and by the time it comes back to you, it’s not even what you said. That game is this book.

It was an interesting concept but kind of dull. I was hoping for more laugh out loud moments instead of eye-rolling hijinks. Some of the characters were quirky and absolutely hilarious, while others were just painful. I’m also kind of confused at why the entire school cared that two people broke up? It’s just a high school relationship, move on with your day!

Teens/tweens will resonate with this and enjoy the banter between the many points of view. As an adult, I found it exhausting. It just goes to show that you can’t believe everything you hear.
