35820721. sy475 The world has changed.

Scientists warned it would happen.

Meteors devastated the Earth. World Governments developed plans to help surviving citizens. The United States disbanded and salvageable land was divided into four quadrants—North, South, East, and West—governed by The Remnant Council.

Struggling to survive, seventeen-year-old Ava ends up in juvenile detention, until she is selected for a new life—with a catch. She must be injected with an experimental serum. The results will be life-changing. The serum will make her better. To receive the serum Ava agrees to join a program controlled by ISAN, the International Sensory Assassin Network.

While on a mission, she is abducted by a rebel group led by Rhett and told that not only does she have a history with him, but her entire past is a lie perpetuated by ISAN to ensure her compliance. Unsure of who to trust, Ava must decide if her strangely familiar and handsome captor is her enemy or her savior—and time is running out.

44149934Alliances are forming. The resistance is growing. Everything is about to change.

With her memory still fragmented, Ava returns to the International Sensory Assassin Network (ISAN) to find the twin sister she never knew she had.

But as Ava hunts for information, she finds herself tangled in a web of yet more lies and conspiracy. The Helix serum may not be required to access her superpowers, and the number of male assassins—previously considered too volatile to tolerate Helix—is growing in every territory.

The more Ava uncovers, the more of a threat she becomes to ISAN. Her only salvation may be to join the rebels—if she isn’t killed first.

First Line Friday – Kingdom of Ash and Soot – C.S. Johnson

Welcome to First Line Friday, where we share the first line in a book! What we’ve been doing lately is sharing the first sentence of an upcoming novel.

In this case, that novel this week is Kingdom of Ash and Soot by C.S. Johnson, which comes out next month.

Check out the amazing first line below!

“My father’s hands, stained with darkened sunlight and roughened sores, were cold as I touched them for the last time.”

Dang, that first line gives me the chills, and also makes me a little sad. I’m currently reading Kingdom of Ash and Soot and it’s really good so far!

Synopsis of Kingdom of Ash and Soot by C.S. Johnson

39604038“I want to be free.” The words came rushing out of me before I could think through their implications and consequences.

“There are two things you need to know about yourself if you want to be free—what you stand for, and what you stand against.” Lady Penelope held up her hands, brandishing a pair of daggers that had been hidden in her skirts. “This world lives enslaved to its destruction, and so long as you are living, as long as you are fighting, you will be free.”

I gazed at the daggers, transfixed. Each blade was clothed in a leather scabbard, but the silver and obsidian of the daggers’ hilts winked at me, as though it was calling for me.

PRAGUE, 1870.

For the last ten years, nineteen-year-old Eleanora Svobodová has worked as a servant in her stepmother’s household. Along with her older brother, she dreams of the day they will be free to live life on their own terms.

But everything changes when their estranged grandmother comes to Prague on behalf of Queen Victoria. Throughout Bohemia, a string of murders and secret whispers hint at a larger coup. As the leader of the Order of the Crystal Daggers, an ancient order of spies and soldiers that protect kingdoms and their rulers, Lady Penelope is determined to mete out the perpetrators. Now, Eleanora must make the choice between a life of intrigue and saving the lives of others.

Can Eleanora find a way do the right thing and still find freedom?

With a fun blend of historical fiction, true love, castle intrigue, and family dysfunction, The Order of the Crystal Daggers is the latest adventure series from C. S. Johnson.

I am totally loving that cover, by the way! I hope you all have a great weekend! 🙂

The Page 69 Test: Exo by Fonda Lee

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a great week, and those attending BEA and BookCon: I’m super jealous but I hope you have a ton of fun! Both of my co-bloggers are attending, and I can’t wait to see photos and hear about the exciting times!

Welcome to the second post of the Page 69 Test. The two paragraphs below illustrate what this post is.

The Page 69 TestMy co-bloggers and I have started a new weekly blog post: The Page 69 Test! Have you heard of the page 69 test? If not, it’s basically where you read page 69 of a book you think you will like. If you liked reading page 69, chances are you will enjoy reading the rest of the book.

Instead of posting the full page, we will be posting the first 10-20 lines of that page, starting with the first full sentence.

My randomizer chose Exo by Fonda Lee.

“And now it was too late; his steps carried him through the entrance. Kevin walked close behind, his rifle never wavering. Two armed men, wearing helmets and panotin vests, shut the doors behind them with a metallic clang.

They were in a cave. A crowd of about thirty people had gathered for their arrival, but at the sight of Donovan, they fell back as if jolted by an electrical barrier. A murmur of shock rose up and echoed against the rock walls and low ceiling. Donovan felt the muzzle of Kevin’s rifle jab into the small of his back. He walked forward, his heart pounding in his throat. Everywhere, he saw hostile stares, rough clothes and faces, unmarked hands–all of it start under the intermittent glare of LED lights running down the tunnel walls, leading him deeper into the hillside. “Home, sweet home!” Kevin shouted. “Someone find Saul, will you? I’ve been out hunting and bagged a big one!”

Donovan bit down. You had nothing to do with it.

What do you think? What do you Kevin meant by “hunting?” And why exactly is Donovan being held captive? Hmmm…

Synopsis of Exo by Fonda Lee

EXOIt’s been a century of peace since Earth became a colony of an alien race with far reaches into the galaxy. Some die-hard extremists still oppose alien rule on Earth, but Donovan Reyes isn’t one of them. His dad holds the prestigious position of Prime Liaison in the collaborationist government, and Donovan’s high social standing along with his exocel (a remarkable alien technology fused to his body) guarantee him a bright future in the security forces. That is, until a routine patrol goes awry and Donovan’s abducted by the human revolutionary group Sapience, determined to end alien control.

When Sapience realizes whose son Donovan is, they think they’ve found the ultimate bargaining chip . But the Prime Liaison doesn’t negotiate with terrorists, not even for his own son. Left in the hands of terrorists who have more uses for him dead than alive, the fate of Earth rests on Donovan’s survival. Because if Sapience kills him, it could spark another intergalactic war. And Earth didn’t win the last one…
