Nathaniel Fremont, the Commissioner’s son, has never had to fear the law. Determined to earn his father’s respect, Nathaniel sets out to capture the Technician. But the more he learns about the outlaw, the more he questions whether his father’s elusive affection is worth chasing at all.

Their game of cat and mouse takes an abrupt turn when Eliza, a skilled assassin and spy, arrives. Her mission is to learn the Commissioner’s secrets at any cost — even if it means betraying her own heart.

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

Violet Sterling has spent the last seven years in exile, longing to return to Burleigh House. One of the six great houses of England, Burleigh’s magic always kept the countryside well. And as a child, this magic kept Violet happy, draping her in flowers while she slept, fashioning secret hiding places for her, and lighting fires on the coldest nights to keep her warm.

Everything shattered, though, when her father committed high treason trying to free Burleigh from the king’s oppressive control. He was killed, and Vi was forced into hiding.

When she’s given a chance to go back, she discovers Burleigh has run wild with grief. Vines and briars are crumbling the walls. Magic that once enriched the surrounding countryside has turned dark and deadly, twisting lush blooms into thorns, poisoning livestock and destroying crops. Burleigh’s very soul is crying out in pain.

Vi would do anything to help, and soon she finds herself walking the same deadly path as her father all those years before. Vi must decide how far she’s willing to go to save her house—before her house destroys everything she’s ever known.

My Review

“Whether I have the protection of a Caretaker’s key or not, I am Violet Helena Sterling. I was born to look after this land, and to care for Burleigh House. No matter the cost. No matter the risks involved.”

The plot is spellbinding and narrates a story I never knew I wanted to read. It’s a story that is deeply rooted within the pages and Violet’s life. It’s not just a story about saving a house, but also about finding your place in this world and rediscovering yourself.

Violet is a strong and brave protagonist, who believes her duty in life is to protect Burleigh and provide Burleigh with anything the House may need. She doesn’t believe her life is meant for anything else. But as she starts to clean up the mess that is Burleigh and reconnect with her best friend, she starts to understand that maybe, just maybe, her life can exist beyond Burleigh. That maybe her life can be her own and not shared with Burleigh. But how can Violet let go of her House and the love she has for it and her family name?

“A good Caretaker puts her House before king. Before country. Before family. Before her own life, even.”

Violet’s relationship with Burleigh is touching and moving; she treats the house as a loved one and vows to do anything to protect and restore Burleigh. Even if it means sacrificing her own life. Violet and Burleigh share a bond that not many Caretakers have shared with their Houses; Burleigh loves Violet in return and when she comes back, Burleigh shows her memories of the past. And in one of those memories, Violet understands what she needs to do: she needs to find Burleigh’s deed and unbind Burleigh from its contract with the devilish king. If she can free Burleigh, then the land and its people will prosper. But it isn’t as easy as it seems, and it could cost Violet her life.

Weymouth’s writing is mesmerizing and captivating; the scenes came to life and the characters were vivid pictures in my head, especially Burleigh. I could feel the anguish between Violet and Burleigh, and I could understand why Violet wanted to save her land and her House. Weymouth weaves a beautiful tale with beautiful writing that will easily make any reader feel a connection with these characters.

A Treason of Thorns isn’t just spellbinding; it’s gripping and magical. I loved the world building and character development throughout the book. I also liked seeing the struggles Violet goes through to try to restore her land; as the reader, I could tell she really wanted this, even after she discovered something else she wanted just as much. A Treason of Thorns is, overall, a beautifully written tale, one that I would easily recommend to anyone.

My Review

Mirror Bound is the sequel to Seventh Born. If you have not read Seventh Born yet, you can check out my review here.

Mirror Bound is a great sequel with magical moments and mesmerizing characters. It’s a sequel that is just as good as the first book, if not better. Sera’s growth in this book is fantastic; she doesn’t just grow as a person, but also grows in using and understanding her magic. It was really nice to see that growth in her character.

Sera is not only struggling with her growing feelings for Barrington and acing her School of Continuing Magic exam, but she’s fighting to maintain control over her mind and body. Ghosts start possessing her and showing her dark and dangerous visions that make it nearly impossible for her to escape from. These possessions cause a slight rift in her real world, where she struggles to determine what’s real and what’s part of a vision. But even through it all, there’s one constant: Barrington.

The chemistry between Sera and Nikolai Barrington jumps off the page. It’s magnetic and emotional; they share a bond that creates a wonderful slow-burn romance; it’s a bond that has developed over time and feels so real. It’s definitely a bond that is one of my favorite slow-burn romances; I was internally yelling at Sera to make a move or for them to just get together.

The overall plot of this book is fantastic. Sera has to face ghosts and souls trapped in mirrors and the mysterious disappearance of seventh born children. There’s so much going on in this book, but it all works together so well and flows well throughout the whole story that nothing is too overwhelming. It all fits well together, and the character interactions only intensify and bring these scenes to life. The world building, like in Seventh Born, is beautiful; I could easily picture the world Sera lives in.

All in all, Mirror Bound is a delightful sequel. Monica Sanz hits it out of the park with this book; her writing is poetic and deep. I’m hoping there’s more in store for Sera and Nikolai (especially with their relationship, as I love these two characters so much).

Mirror Bound is out now, and if you have not read Seventh Born, I highly recommend!

*Blog Tour + Giveaway* Tiger Queen by Annie Sullivan

TigerQueen-Cover

Title: Tiger Queen

Author: Annie Sullivan

Publisher: BLINK

Release date: September 10, 2019

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

From Annie Sullivan, author of A Touch of Gold, comes Tiger Queen, a sweeping YA fantasy adventure that tells the story of a fierce desert princess battling to save her kingdom. Fans of Rebel of the Sands and Meagan Spooner will devour this retelling of Frank Stockton’s famous short story, “The Lady, or the Tiger?”

In the mythical desert kingdom of Achra, an ancient law forces sixteen-year-old Princess Kateri to fight in the arena to prove her right to rule. For Kateri, winning also means fulfilling a promise to her late mother that she would protect her people, who are struggling through windstorms and drought. The situation is worsened by the gang of Desert Boys that frequently raids the city wells, forcing the king to ration what little water is left. The punishment for stealing water is a choice between two doors: behind one lies freedom, and behind the other is a tiger.

But when Kateri’s final opponent is announced, she knows she cannot win. In desperation, she turns to the desert and the one person she never thought she’d side with. What Kateri discovers twists her world—and her heart—upside down. Her future is now behind two doors—only she’s not sure which holds the key to keeping her kingdom and which releases the tiger.

My Review

Tiger Queen is the first book I’ve read from Annie Sullivan and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. It’s action-packed with amazing character development and world building. Tiger Queen is a gritty novel that truly depicts what it would be like to live in the desert with multiple hardships. But, overall, it’s a book about overcoming boundaries and finding yourself in a world that constantly pushes you down.

“We can’t focus on what we’ve lost or the weight of it will bury us faster than the sand. We have to focus on what’s still to gain. We have to focus on finding joy when we can.”

Princess Kateri is a strong and brave protagonist, with a story that many can connect with. In order for her to win the crown, she has to battle a set of opponents in the arena and if she loses, she has to marry that opponent that night. Because if she can’t defeat all her suitors, then her father and her people see her as a weakness and not the strongest leader her kingdom could have. And because of this, Kateri feels like she has to constantly prove herself and that she can never make a mistake. Which is why she needs to defeat her last opponent. But when his identity is revealed, she knows she won’t be able to beat him without help. More specifically, she needs the help of the only person who knows her opponent well: Cion, the leader of the desert boys.

As long as Kateri has been alive, the desert boys have caused chaos within her kingdom by stealing their water. Her menacing father keeps restricting the water wells, which only pushes the desert boys to steal more water. But what Kateri learns from them makes her question everything her father has ever told her. Kateri not only learns more about the desert boys and their culture, but Cion also shows Kateri that not everything is about strength and being brave; there are times you are allowed to have fun and loosen up and be vulnerable, even for someone fighting for the crown and their life.

“‘Scars tell their own stories,’ Cion said, ‘and out here, we listen to them.'”

Princess Kateri thought she knew who she was and what her destiny was supposed to be within her castle walls. But the longer she spends with the desert boys, the more she realizes that her life in the castle was like a caged tiger: trapped, with no way of escaping. Just like her mother, who she promised she would change the world for all the kingdoms’ people, including the desert boys. Kateri also sees firsthand what’s it like to truly live in the desert, and she faces hardships she never had to face in her castle. But out in the desert, she finds more of herself and more of a connection with her mother, than she thought she would. She starts to learn what it means to really live a life to its fullest.

Sullivan brings the desert to life in this book with her mesmerizing and beautiful world building. She doesn’t just depict what living in the desert is like, but what the people of Kateri’s kingdom are like and what must be done for everyone to survive. Living in the desert isn’t an easy life, and Sullivan does a phenomenal job portraying the daily struggles. It’s a life that seems to only promise struggles and hardships for many. But Sullivan lets the reader know that Princess Kateri can change that, if only she is brave enough to do so.

“I hadn’t thought love could truly exist in this desert. I thought it was the biggest mirage of all. Something meant to trick those who sought it out, to distract them from their miserable lives, the ones without futures. But it wasn’t. It was about hope. It was about having a future worth living.”

Tiger Queen is a fun and fast-paced novel with a strong protagonist and amazing side characters. I was thoroughly impressed with Sullivan’s book, and I plan to read the rest of her books. Tiger Queen comes out Tuesday, September 10, so grab you copy this upcoming week!

“Fierce and unrelenting…Do yourself a favor and get lost in this beautiful book!” — Tomi Adeyemi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Children of Blood and Bone

Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice, Adalyn Grace’s All the Stars and Teeth is a thrilling fantasy for fans of Stephanie Garber’s Caraval and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series.

She will reign.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.
