Author: by Kathryn Purdie

Publisher: HarperCollins/Katherine Tegen

Release Date: March 10th 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

Bone Criers have a sacred duty. They alone can keep the dead from preying on the living. And that promise comes at the cost of the Bone Criers’ one true love.

Ailesse has been prepared since birth to become the matriarch of the Bone Criers, a mysterious famille of women who use strengths drawn from animal bones to ferry dead souls. But first she must complete her rite of passage and kill the boy she’s also destined to love.

Bastien’s father was slain by a Bone Crier and he’s been seeking revenge ever since. Yet when he finally captures one, his vengeance will have to wait. Ailesse’s ritual has begun and now their fates are entwined—in life and in death.

Sabine has never had the stomach for the Bone Criers’ work. But when her best friend Ailesse is taken captive, Sabine will do whatever it takes to save her, even if it means defying their traditions—and their matriarch—to break the bond between Ailesse and Bastien. Before they all die.

My Review

Holy wow, does Kathryn Purdie know how to write an amazing story! I was absolutely blown away by this beautiful tale and the fantastical elements. Purdie brought a magical world to life with captivating characters and a love you’re bound to root for.

Ailesse is such a great character – she’s strong and fierce and believes she knows what she wants. She’s ready to become the Bone Crier’s matriarch. But in order to become one, she must kill her one true love. And she’s prepared to…right? When lives become entwined and feelings intervene, Ailesse realizes she may not be fully prepared for the one ritual she’s been waiting for her whole life. And how, exactly, do you stop your destiny from going down that one single path? It’s not easy but Ailesse is one of those characters that I know would do anything to prevent a certain event from happening.

And her one true love, Bastien, is also strong but seeks revenge, not realizing that who he seeks revenge on has already started her ritual — and he’s now part of it. I have to say – Bastien is one of those swoon-worthy characters (even if he is driven by revenge). His growing relationship with Ailesse just had me so excited for their interactions. Both characters complement one another and as the reader, I could easily see why they were destined soul mates.

In all honesty, I found all the characters to be exceptionally written and described. Each had their own flaws which were well portrayed. And each character, especially Sabine, showed devotion and courage in everything they did. Sabine will do anything to protect Ailesse; her loyalty to her best friend is one reason I loved her character so much. She’s not afraid to fight for Ailesse; she wants her to be happy, even if it means changing her’s and Ailesse’s fates.

Outside of the characters, I felt the world building and writing was absolutely phenomenal. Purie has created a world that pulled me right in and didn’t let go until the last page. Her writing is truly what brought this story to life; Purdie is definitely an author bookworms should follow if they love out-of-this-world world building with lush writing and exceptional characters.

Overall, I’d have to say that this is going to be one of my top reads of 2020. Just the whole world and story and plot was mesmerizing and I found it difficult to put this book down. I highly recommend reading Bone Crier’s Moon, especially for those readers looking for a slow burn romance with a tantalizing plot. And needless to say, I cannot wait for the sequel!

*Blog Tour + Review* Havenfall by Sara Holland

BOOK COVER (3)

Title: Havenfall (Havenfall #1)

Author: Sara Holland

Publisher: Bloomsbury YA

Release Date: March 3rd 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

A safe haven between four realms. The girl sworn to protect it–at any cost. New York Times bestselling author Sara Holland crafts a breathtaking new contemporary fantasy perfect for fans of Melissa Albert and Holly Black.

Hidden deep in the mountains of Colorado lies the Inn at Havenfall, a sanctuary that connects ancient worlds–each with their own magic–together. For generations, the inn has protected all who seek refuge within its walls, and any who disrupt the peace can never return.

For Maddie Morrow, summers at the inn are more than a chance to experience this magic first-hand. Havenfall is an escape from reality, where her mother sits on death row accused of murdering Maddie’s brother. It’s where Maddie fell in love with handsome Fiorden soldier Brekken. And it’s where one day she hopes to inherit the role of Innkeeper from her beloved uncle.

But this summer, the impossible happens–a dead body is found, shattering everything the inn stands for. With Brekken missing, her uncle gravely injured, and a dangerous creature on the loose, Maddie suddenly finds herself responsible for the safety of everyone in Havenfall. She’ll do anything to uncover the truth, even if it means working together with an alluring new staffer Taya, who seems to know more than she’s letting on. As dark secrets are revealed about the inn itself, one thing becomes clear to Maddie–no one can be trusted, and no one is safe . . .

Sara Holland takes the lush fantasy that captured readers in Everless and Evermore and weaves it into the real world to create a wholly captivating new series where power and peril lurk behind every door.

My Review

“Lots of things that can kill you are beautiful.”

I’ll start off by saying Sara Holland is one of my favorite authors. Everless, her first book, had me hooked from the first sentence and from there, she easily became an auto-buy author. So, you can probably imagine my excitement when she announced her next book, Havenfall. And to me, this book did not disappoint.

In Havenfall, Holland introduces a new world to her readers, one filled with many magical worlds and captivating people. And a storyline that quickly takes a dark turn. It’s a book filled with hidden darkness and intriguing interactions; it’s a story that may easily capture the hearts of many readers, like it captured mine.

“The great thing about Havenfall–well, one of them–is that I’m the least remarkable person here.”

Maddie is the protagonist in Havenfall, and throughout the whole story, she felt real, even if most of her problems had to deal with magical beings and hidden worlds. She’s always wanted to be the Innkeeper of Havenfall (a place where magical beings can seek refuge), it’s been her big dream for as long as she can remember. And it was still her dream after her brother was murdered and her mom was placed on death row. But when that position is unexpectedly handed to her, she doesn’t know what to do. She’s not ready for the role but she accepts it to keep the peace and to figure out what exactly happened that fateful night a Solarian escaped.

quote1 (1)

One of the things I liked about Maddie is that she fought for what she wanted, even if nothing turned out how she expected. She’s a fighter and a survivor and those things made her a strong character in her story. Her relationships with some of the characters, like Brekken and Taya (especially Taya), really brought her characterization to light and I really enjoyed those heartfelt interactions. Taya was most definitely my second favorite character. She’s spunky and sassy and I was rooting for her the whole time (and, yes, she is very much a love interest :D). But overall, I found everyone’s characterizations to be on point and fit well with the story, even if some did prove to have a dark and dangerous past.

“What happened to her family was no one’s fault. Mine, though–those secrets are ugly. And looking down at the water, at who I could be, I know I want none of those memories at Havenfall. They are my past, but this place is my future. It has to be.”

I loved the whole idea behind the concept of these ancient worlds being held behind doors, and that they’re hidden unusual, yet beautifully scenic, inn. The depictions of each world were great, and I liked how Holland included many worlds, but only focused on four (the fourth being Earth). I didn’t know I was craving a book about multiple worlds until I read Havenfall, and Holland easily brings a unique idea to life with her storytelling.

Holland’s writing, as usual, is elegant and visually stunning. It’s a book filled with beautiful prose and lush world building. I could easily picture the many worlds and characters. I loved her world building, especially with the depictions of each world outside of Haven (Earth). The worlds felt magical, and Holland created some beautiful scenery that easily made Earth feel magical. I will say I found the pacing to be a tad slow, but I felt that the characters and the plot twists made up for that. There were a few plot twists I guessed were coming but there was one that threw me through a loop and, because of that twist, I immediately devoured the last several chapters.

All in all, Havenfall is an exciting new addition from Sara Holland, filled with some illustrious magical characters, a charming scenery that readers are sure to get lost in, dark secrets that beg to be let out, and unforgettable prose that will have Everless readers remembering why they fell in love with Holland’s writing.

With how this book ended, I can’t wait for the sequel. I’m so excited for my hardcover preorder to arrive on Tuesday because this book is definitely going to be part of my 2020 favorites collection.

My Review

They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart.
And they never will.

The Shadows Between Us is by far one of my favorite standalone fantasy books. There’s always going to be books that make it almost impossible for you to put down. That was the case with The Shadows Between Us. I could not put this book down. And even after days of finishing the story, I can’t keep the characters off my mind and out of my heart.

“I know when I’ve been beaten, and I have barely even started.”

The characters are strong and ruthless. I loved how this book was pitched as a Slytherin romance because that’s exactly what it is. Both characters are cunning and vengeful and beautifully illustrated. Alessandra has no problem being murderous, especially when she needs to kill someone for something she needs. She’s a dark and morally gray character, but that’s one of the reasons that makes this book so good. She has no issue showing the world who she is and that’s what made her such an enjoyable character for me. Levenseller wrote a book with characters that could be hard to love and difficult for readers to see the logic behind most of their actions. But she wrote a book that’s so unbelievably good!

And the romance is definitely worth all the swooning. It’s raw and fresh and built on deception, but I feel that’s how a good villain romance usually starts. And this villainous romance is one readers will not soon forget. Even though Alessandra wants to kill the king, she never expected to feel a certain way about him, a feeling that could potentially put her whole plan at risk.

“Rest assured, the only dangerous thing out here is me.”

I love how this story is dark and unapologetic. It’s a story that’s perfect for readers who are looking for a dark world and deliciously vengeful characters. It’s a book I didn’t realize I needed until I read the first page and literally went “WOW.” The Shadows Between Us is a powerful story that doesn’t just focus on what Allesandra is trying to destroy/build; it also focuses on the blossoming of a new relationship and both characters’ pasts and futures. It focuses on how dark characters can continuously stay dark but find a light inside that darkness, a light that shows that each character is not as corrupted as they may seem.

“Don’t be afraid of who you are. Say what you wish. Be who you wish. Don’t try to be someone else.”

And once again, Levenseller has created a world that is dark and vicious but overall beautiful. Her world building is exquisite and completely fits the darkness of each character. She’s created a world of deceitfulness but also a world that has the ability to change. It’s unlike any fantasy world I’ve seen and I loved that aspect of the story. I loved how everything was different from most fantasy stories.

Levenseller has created an unforgettable story with characters that will surprise you in the most unsettling ways. It’s a story that is worth all the hype. The Shadows Between Us is easily a book I can read over and over again. This book is perfect for those readers looking for a dark and devious tale.

My Review

“Darkness waits like a devil outside my window – curling its shadowy fingertips beneath the shutters, drawing its inky claws across the latch, raising every hair on my body as temptation trickles down my spine.”

Night Spinner is one of those tales that’s hard to forget after reading. I have yet to read a retelling of Hunchback of Notre Dame, and I was blown away by this powerful retelling. If Night Spinner is not on your radar, I’d definitely make sure it’s added; it’s a story many readers will love!

I am not what they make of me, but what I make of me.

Enebish, in this story, is Quasimodo from the classic. She’s an ex-warrior, someone that many people identify as a monster and murderer with rare and dangerous magic. Yet she’s stricken with guilt, which is a leading factor as to why she accepts her adoptive sister’s offer to capture a criminal. But Enebish soon starts to realize that not everything goes as planned and not everyone can be trusted.

“The time for timidness has long since passed. We must all take risks. Make sacrifices.”

Enebish is an exceptionally well-written character. She’s strong but fights her past demons every day, struggling with finding ways to move on. But she’s not a quitter, she’s a fighter and she refuses to give up. Her characterization makes for a fast-paced story with incredible action. And the many characters she meets on her travels (and the characters from her past) help shape and define who she is and she becomes. Each character plays a different role in Enebish’s story, and each character, in their way, is captivating.

You miss many things when your world is so small.

The world building is absolutely breathtaking, with visionary descriptions and lush prose. I felt immediately part of the world and landscape, and immediately part of this exciting story. Thorley’s writing is what truly brought this story to life for me; her writing is exceptional. She knows how to weave together a remarkable story with unforgettable characters.

Night Spinner easily became one of those stories that captured my attention from the beginning. It’s a fierce retelling that is sure to enamor any reader who picks it up. I believe this is a tale I’ll always recommend, as it’s definitely found a place in my bookish heart.

My Review

“Fear is part of life; all that matters is what we do with it.”

2020 is off to a great reading year, all thanks to this beautiful fantasy debut. All the Stars and Teeth is a powerful and adventurous debut that is bound to be a front runner in the YA fantasy section this year. This book has strong characters, pirates, mermaids, an unique magic system, and exquisite action scenes. But most of all, this story has heart and showcases what it means to handle an unknown future and to fight for a world you want to protect.

“But even our idols–those we want to love and trust more than anything–can let us down.”

This world, this story, is everything I look for in a YA fantasy book. There’s constant action in this book, starting from the first page to the last sentence. There was never a time where the story was overwhelming or description-overload; it had the perfect amount of witty banter and magic. The world Adalyn Grace has created is breathtaking and spellbinding; I love the whole island concept and the magic system. But though I loved the world, the characters are what sold this story to me.

“The mistakes I made in the past do not make me weak; I’ll use them to become stronger. I’m done being afraid of my own power.”

I absolutely loved the characters. Amora is strong and fierce and will do absolutely anything for her people and kingdom. Her bravery, selflessness, and unrelenting desire to fix the wrongs is what made her voice interesting and captivating. Her soul magic is what makes her people (and herself) frightened; it’s a magic she intends to master and use for good, but first, she has to choose to no longer be afraid of her dangerous magic and her past. Her story is one that is mesmerizing and she has a voice that demands to be heard, a voice that easily makes this story a dazzling read.

“We’ve shared an experience only a few people will understand, and it’s marked our souls. The sea is a beast more fearsome than even the Lusca.”

And then there’s Bastian, the pirate who wants his stolen magic back, but also wants to see a mysterious evil brought to its end. Bastian is definitely swoon-worthy, but also soft, in a good way. He has a deep and hurtful history that, at times, becomes personal to the story. His past has scarred him, but yet he continues to move on and fight for what’s right. Bastian is, in every way, a character with many flaws but a strong soul, which is why him and Amora have such a strong bond. And I loved their scenes together; they have great chemistry together and both, in similar yet different ways, want what’s best for the kingdom. Their romance is not so strong that it overtakes the whole story, but it’s strong enough to illustrate that there is more to come for both characters. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely romance (and kissing!), but it builds overtime and not all at once, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

But I have to say one of my overall favorite characters was Vataea. She’s sassy and, at some times, quite charming but she proves to be an ally and possibly a friend. Her scenes (especially with Ferrick) had me jumping for joy because I loved the idea of a powerful mermaid who fits perfectly well with this ordinary crew. I’m really hoping to see more of her in the second book; she’s got an interesting backstory, and I’d love to find out more about her.

“We’re more than our blood, both of us.”

Adalyn Grace’s writing is lush and beautiful. She depicts a world of enchantment and magic, but also filled with growing darkness and fear. I was easily able to fall into this story and imagine myself beside Amora and her crew. Grace’s writing is filled with so much heart that I could see just how much this story meant to her. Her writing is lyrical at times, especially when describing the islands and the magic system and characters. Grace can also weave together an action scene so splendidly that it felt as if I was on the ship with them, fighting the sea beast or the cursed darkness. Her writing, overall, provided the perfect voice for this wonderful fantasy story.

All the Stars and Teeth will most likely be one of my favorite reads of the year. If you enjoy fantasy stories with a swoon-worthy pirate, loyal friends, dangerous mermaids, and a unique magic system, then I definitely recommend reading this beautiful story. I can’t wait for the second book, but in the meantime, I’ll continue to gush about this book to anyone!

My rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

BOOK COVER (2)

Title: Ink in the Blood (Ink in The Blood #1)

Author: by Kim Smejkal

Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers

Release Date: February 11th 2020

Genre: Young Adult, LGBT, Fantasy

Synopsis:

A lush, dark YA fantasy debut that weaves together tattoo magic, faith, and eccentric theater in a world where lies are currency and ink is a weapon, perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo and Kendare Blake.

Celia Sand and her best friend, Anya Burtoni, are inklings for the esteemed religion of Profeta. Using magic, they tattoo followers with beautiful images that represent the Divine’s will and guide the actions of the recipients. It’s considered a noble calling, but ten years into their servitude Celia and Anya know the truth: Profeta is built on lies, the tattooed orders strip away freedom, and the revered temple is actually a brutal, torturous prison.

Their opportunity to escape arrives with the Rabble Mob, a traveling theater troupe. Using their inkling abilities for performance instead of propaganda, Celia and Anya are content for the first time . . . until they realize who followed them. The Divine they never believed in is very real, very angry, and determined to use Celia, Anya, and the Rabble Mob’s now-infamous stage to spread her deceitful influence even further.

To protect their new family from the wrath of a malicious deity and the zealots who work in her name, Celia and Anya must unmask the biggest lie of all—Profeta itself.

My Review

“They’d play like Diavala and be tricksters all the way.”

Ink in the Blood is one of those stories that holds a powerful meaning and can easily maintain a reader’s attention. I was pleasantly amazed with how this story unfolded. I enjoyed the characters, the array of LGBT representation, but I overall enjoyed most the bond between two girls and their fight for their own destiny.

The writing is both lyrical and poetic. Honestly, the writing is what really drew me into the story (once I started to read, the beautiful cover initially captured my attention). The author has such lush writing that I could easily imagine the world and the characters. I was enamored with this story and the dark world building. Everything is so beautifully described and depicted.

“That time, his smile almost killed her.”

I really enjoyed the magic system in this story. Ink magic in the form of tattoos is unique and quite intriguing; it’s such a neat idea to think of ink in someone’s veins. But at the heart of this story lies a bigger, more meaningful type of magic: freedom. Celia and her best friend, Anya, want to escape the Profeta, which works out well for them when a traveling theater troupe comes through their town. But what Celia wasn’t expecting was to be followed by the Divine; and Celia has now given the Divine the perfect opportunity to spread her mendacious influence.

“Only the damned speak with devils.”

I won’t lie, I was a bit surprised in the direction this story went, in a good way. I wasn’t expecting the story to be so dark, but it fit so well with the plot and the characters. The concept behind the people wanting to create a world of fear is beautifully done and believable, and Smejkal did a wonderful job creating that overall dark vibe of the story. She easily depicts how difficult it is to create a future for yourself when the Divine wants your freedom and when people live in a world of constant fear.

“Sometimes what looks like betrayal is actually the biggest sacrifice.”

I have to say that my favorite part about this story was Celia’s and Anya’s relationship. Their friendship meant everything in this story; both girls were there for one another and fought for each other. That’s the type of bond I love to see in fantasy stories, and Kim Smejkal did a great job illustrating that bond. Both girls also want to change their fate; they each want to be able to pick their future instead of live in the one already dictated for them. I loved seeing how each girl overcame their struggles and fought for something they truly believed was possible. Their story provided hope and

Overall, I was impressed with this debut novel. The bond between Celia and Anya is phenomenal and really ties this story together. This is a wonderfully-done fantasy debut, and I can’t wait to see what happens next with the characters.

My rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
