In the violent urban jungle of an alternate 1828 Paris, the French Revolution has failed and the city is divided between merciless royalty and nine underworld criminal guilds, known as the Court of Miracles. Eponine (Nina) Thénardier is a talented cat burglar and member of the Thieves Guild. Nina’s life is midnight robberies, avoiding her father’s fists, and watching over her naïve adopted sister, Cosette (Ettie). When Ettie attracts the eye of the Tiger–the ruthless lord of the Guild of Flesh–Nina is caught in a desperate race to keep the younger girl safe. Her vow takes her from the city’s dark underbelly to the glittering court of Louis XVII. And it also forces Nina to make a terrible choice–protect Ettie and set off a brutal war between the guilds, or forever lose her sister to the Tiger.

Review

At first, it seemed like a weird combination to say this book is like Les Misérables meets Six of Crows. But surprisingly, it works really well. This was such a fun, adventurous, and fast-paced young adult fantasy novel by a new and promising author. The Court of Miracles is a beautifully written and empowering story that is a perfect blend of history and fantasy.

“You must make your enemies your allies. And if you can’t do that, then destroy them.”

The characters are so well developed and easily relatable. Nina is such a strong and wickedly kickbutt heroine. I loved how she was portrayed and how her bond with her sisters was the most important thing to her. Her relationship with her sister, Ettie, was moving and so realistic. She would do absolutely anything for her younger sister, and that says a lot about the type of character she is in this brutal world. Nina’s relationships with Ettie and her friends are constantly tested, so it goes to show just how strong she really is.

But the story isn’t just about Nina’s bond with her younger sister. It’s also filled with shocking betrayals. Nina thought she knew who she could trust but she quickly realizes that she can trust no one but herself in her cruel world.

“To be a girl in this city is to be weak. It is to call evil things down upon you. And the City is not kind to weak things.”

I was obsessed with the world building. It’s enchanting, a charmingly vibrant world that’s filled with just as much darkness as there is light. The magic aspect fits so well into this world; I enjoyed how the magic was separated into factions and how it molded into the law of the world. Just every aspect of this world and its contenders (because in a way, this world is either be the hunter or be hunted) is hauntingly beautiful. The world building was everything I hoped for and more.

“Sometimes we must pay a terrible price to protect the things we love.”

The story itself is filled with breathtaking and riveting moments, moments that I was remembering days after reading this story. Grant’s writing is superb and truly grasps the reader’s attention. She’s created a story filled to the brim with betrayal and surprising twists. The Court of Miracles is a wholly new and fascinating world steaming with historical flavors, and Grant does a phenomenal job combining two different genres. She brings to the table a strong and compelling story, one that I really hope many young adult fantasy readers choose to read.

Overall, I was blown away by this fantasy debut and I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for us next. The Court of Miracles is filled with adventure, shocking deception, strong relationships, sisterly bond, and so much more. I highly recommend this fantasy story to all readers!

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? 6/1/20

Happy Monday and welcome to June.

I’m not sure what happened to May but it’s behind us now and hopefully, June will be a better month for all of us.

This week I’m going to read a book that I’ve owned for quite some time, a book that my husband purchased from a thrift store months and months ago, a book that I’ve received from Waterstones, and a book that the publisher sent me.

What are you reading?

I hope everyone has a great week and stay safe!

Today Tonight Tomorrow- Rachel Lynn Solomon

52766407. sx318 sy475 The Hating Game meets Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist by way of Morgan Matson in this unforgettable romantic comedy about two rival overachievers whose relationship completely transforms over the course of twenty-four hours.

Today, she hates him.

It’s the last day of senior year. Rowan Roth and Neil McNair have been bitter rivals for all of high school, clashing on test scores, student council elections, and even gym class pull-up contests. While Rowan, who secretly wants to write romance novels, is anxious about the future, she’d love to beat her infuriating nemesis one last time.

Tonight, she puts up with him.

When Neil is named valedictorian, Rowan has only one chance at victory: Howl, a senior class game that takes them all over Seattle, a farewell tour of the city she loves. But after learning a group of seniors is out to get them, she and Neil reluctantly decide to team up until they’re the last players left—and then they’ll destroy each other.

As Rowan spends more time with Neil, she realizes he’s much more than the awkward linguistics nerd she’s sparred with for the past four years. And, perhaps, this boy she claims to despise might actually be the boy of her dreams.

Tomorrow…maybe she’s already fallen for him.

*Arc Review* The Princess Will Save You (#1)- Sarah Henning

52378724. sx318 sy475 A PRINCESS
A STABLE BOY
A QUEST

When her father dies, Princess Amarande is given an ultimatum: Marry the leader of one of the four neighboring kingdoms, or lose her crown—and possibly her life. And to force her hand, her beloved, the stable boy Luca, is kidnapped.

But Amarande was raised to be a warrior, not a sacrifice.

And nothing will stop her from saving her true love and rescuing her kingdom.

The acclaimed author of Sea Witch turns the classic damsel-in-distress tale on its head with this story of adventure, identity, and love.

My Review

“True love is the most powerful force on this earth- we just forget it because those with power here deal in fear rather than love.”

Princess Bride GIF - Princess Bride Wesley - Discover & Share GIFs

The Princess Bride is a classic and was an instant favorite when I was younger and it still is to this day. So when I heard that Henning was writing a strong feminist retelling, I was nervously excited because those are some pretty big shoes to fill. But Henning stepped up to the plate, knocked it out of the park, and left me in awe.

What if Buttercup saved Westley? This gender-swapped fantasy retelling will let you know that you should never underestimate the power of a female.

King Sendoa of Ardenia dies suddenly, leaving Princess Amarande the only heir to the throne. But since she’s female and not yet wed, the Kingdom can’t be hers until some of the requirements are met. Princes from other territories come far and wide to ask to take her hand in marriage but she wants the rules to change. She wants to rule Ardenia alone until she finds the right person and time to marry.

To force her into marrying someone she despises, Luca, her best friend and beloved is kidnapped.

She was always taught to fight for what she believes in and never sacrifice for something less. There is only one thing to do. That’s to put her life on the line to save Luca and her Kingdom. Nothing or no one will step in her way.

Okay, wow! This was epic. This was one of the best unique retellings that I’ve ever read. Henning took a classic that is close to my heart and turned it into something that is her own while also twisting the damsel in distress tale overboard. You’ll be amazed at the power of her words.

Princess Amarande was such a badass and strong character. She’s who we need at the head of this feminist revolution and I’m glad she’s now apart of my life. She also has made a special place in my heart. Her story and dedication for what she believes in will make you proud to be reading her story. She’s one character that will always stick with you.

The Princess Will Save You is the Princess Bride reimagining that we all needed. My mind is still blown by what I have read. This is one everyone needs to experience. It’s one that has left me speechless.

WWW Wednesday 5-27-20

It’s that day of the week!! Hump day! Know what that means it’s WWW Wednesday. What do you ask that is? The 3 w’s. What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish and what is your next read?

1. What I’m currently reading is five feet apart

What this book is about a girl who has CF a condition which makes extra mucus in the lungs and hard to breath. To be honest not sure why I am I don’t do sad books well and I hardly read them but maybe choose it so could buddy read with my friend sam. So far 30% you feel for the characters but just not sticking to me so heavily going a 3 star read for now guess a wait and see.

What I recently finished is sooo many books from the level up series.

These books are so geeky and they are short and I love them on top they are romance so I get my hot steamy scenes I like to read that I don’t get in YA contemporary. Plus most of the books help try to face a issue. Like first book is a gender equality. Tessa is trying hard to become game coder but for now is only just a audio maker for the games. Low and behold she learns from her room mate a spot is opened up who also works with her. You get the idea. So main book has serious luck but MC that has her anxiety’s but when it comes crunch time she is a powerful MC. So this series think Geekerella but add in some romance flare easily 5 out of 5 stars not one book hasn’t been less yet.

What I plan to read next?

Love this book to pieces and will be part of my yearly re reads. It’s super funny, the romance is awesome. Kick butt MC’s and I mean both of them. And side characters just add it over the top. What more can you from a witch and witch hunter. And my fav fantasy read of 2019. So if haven’t read it I beg you please do or add to top of TBR!
